Hibben Knives

Supposedly his customs are very good and, collecting-wise, worth what they cost. But personally, most of his designs just don't click with me, and in my humble opinion, he lost a lot of credibility selling mall-ninja fantasy designs to United Cutlery.

If you like spending a lot of time off-planet, his stuff is great!
I don't see too many Klingons where I live, so I'll stick to spending my money on real stuff.

Know what you mean. The off planet stuff is none too pleasing. I was looking at the "Alaskan Small pro Guide Hunter"

KnifeNut's Thoughts: (you can't afford a real Gil Hibben)

I'd look into other steels, and other knives. As far as I know, the 420 steels are adequate, but nothing special. Cutleries use them because they make production easier. If that knife is not made in the U.S. (Spanish?) do you care? I'd check that. Personally, I prefer to support home grown industry.
Sorry for the rant. Hibben stuff obviously does not make me feel all warm and fuzzy:p

420J is the same stuff many (most?) of the United knives are made from, and it's reputation for holding an edge is pretty far down the list.

I bought a Gil Hibben dagger about 10 years ago and it is probably the only knive I have that I have not been able to put an edge on. :thumbdn:

It looks good though. :D

never seen a 'real' hibben knife yet. all ive seen is united stuff and its crap.i tend to stay away from anything with his name on it .

Thanks you'all. Thought that it looked awful purty for the $$. Guess that I'll be stearing my ship in another direction.

Here's an original piece handmade by Gil. Got it as an engagement present and carried it OTJ in the mid '80's. When I found out that there was only one other like it, I semi-retired mine. It's the most bulletproof hollow handle I have.

I have known Gil Hibben a long time and owned at one time, a few knives made by him at Manti, Utah. I knew him in Alaska and he is very good, the first maker to introduce 440C to the market. But, Gil has gone off of a very deep end more than once and I am afraid it has colored my impression of his knives and this is in addition to his latest rages of Rambo type stuff/
