Sal:

What's with the extra large logos on a number of blades recently?

First the Spyker and now the Volpe:

IMHO it detracts from the smooth, clean lines of these knives.:(

Maybe this is just a pic of the prototype? I am anxious to get one of these and I could live with the writing myself but see your point as well. I hope they are out soon!

On the SpyKer, we had to get the name of both companies on the blade. It was a "one shot" deal so there won't more SpyKers.

On the Volpe, it was the deigners way of putting the name on the blade. I imagine if the design is well accepted, future changes are possible, if the market demands changes.

On most designs these days, the "Bug" on the front side in front of the hole and the designer's name or sig on the back side.

I honestly don't get the big uproar (okay, small uproar) about big logos on knife blades. Does it cut well? Is it what you expected, performance-wise? Function before fashion. If you aren't a person that needs a 'sterile blade', what's the big deal???? I don't mean to sound like a pr1ck, but it's a knife; if it does what it's supposed to, then all is cool by me. If you don't like the logos, ultra-fine sandpaper takes it off real quick.

Knives cut, yes. Spydercos perform well, yes. But just like cars, a good cheap used one will get you from point A to B, so why do we buy more expensive vehicles and choose the color and options? Personal taste.

Good idea though on the sandpaper, never thought of that. I understand Sal's point though, gotta give credit where credit is due. Can't please all the people all the time, just some of the people some of the time, etc, etc...

You guys let us know how the sanding effort goes with your $100+ Spykers and Volpes. :D

Actually, I don't have either one. I was going to try it on an older Military that I paid $50.00 for.

Let's face it; the SPYKER is a COLLECTOR (limited run by two of the biggest and best cproduction collaborators in the industry). Regardless, the knife is winner and performs quite well. I just don't see what the big deal is about the logo sh1t. It's a knife. If you consider it a collector, then it shouldn't matter. If it's a user, it also shouldn't matter either. With use, that logo will wear off, anyway. Now, if you want it for some 'covert-ops' thing, contact Sal; I'm sure he could fix you up. And, by the way, a super-find grit sand paper DOES work excellent. You just have to do the whole blade. It will, however, give it an almost mirror polish; but, then again, that shouldn't matter to those who want a prety, 'logo-less' blade.

I don’t know about the Spyker, but I did remove the big, black "MILITARY" stamp on the blade of an older Military I had. It was an extremely difficult job. The lettering isn't lightly etched onto the blade: it's laser engraved. Removing it by hand with the even the roughest sandpaper available took many hours. A belt grinder is really the only way to go.

BTW, the original diamond engraving on the Military model was gorgeous. I don’t think that’s showed up on any Spydies since then though. Maybe it was cost prohibitive or just too plain fancy? :)

Its nice to find that there is someone else who feels the way I do. I really don't like how my knife has "POLICE" etched on the blade and it really irks me when I have people tell me that I should just suck it up b/c it still cuts good. I've been planning on removing it with some sand paper or a belt grinder but I want to get some pratice on some cheap flea market knife before I go at my Spyderco lol. I would hate to make it look worse than it already does.

Here's the lesson Sal:

No one minds small, tasteful logos.

A Good Portion despise large logos.

Why alienate at least half of a knife's potential market?

Go with small, tasteful logos please.

It really doesn't matter to me. I couldn't care less if the whole knife was tattooed little Spyder bugs, as long as it cuts, and it's comfortable, I'll buy it.

But that's only my opinion, and who am I to judge someone else's preference on this issue.

I'm not a fan of logos, especially on the Salt series! However, certain ones IMHO add to the knife, such as Ed Schempp's trademarks, and Sals/Erics initials. Large logos would not keep me from buying a design I like, but if I had the option I would go with just the Spyderbug, Designer initials, and steel markings

I don't mind small tastefull logos. I actually like a neat little emblem like a "bug" or something. I think it ads to the look sometimes. I really hate large nameplates plastered on the blade or the handle. It just smacks of CHEAP. It really turns a quality Spyderco into looking like a cheap wannabe.

Sorry Sal but just don't like them. The Spyker was the worst. The Military is bad as well.

Don't feel bad telling Spyderco what you like and don't like about the knives. I think Sal and the rest of Spyderco actually care what we think so even though it seems like we do nothing but complain and critique, I think it is good in the long run. We are a source of a lot of knowledge for the company. Spyderco has a great tool in us because we are customers that constantly let them know what we think. A lot of other companies pay to do the type of research we blurt out for free. A lot will pay you to do surveys of their products to get some idea of what the customer is thinking.

Given a choice, the only logo I would ever want to seen on a Spyderco blade would be on a collaboration model and would be the logo of the custom maker involved in that collaboration.

That said, I would not let the presence of a logo, regardless of size, stop me from purchasing a knife I otherwise liked. I'd carry a Stretch even if it looked like this... :D

At the other extreme, I find the Volpe so totally unappealing that the presence or absence of a logo is irrelevant.

I feel the same way. I actually like the Spyderco bug logo that came on my Military and greatly prefer it over the old Military that I previously owned. I always hate it when I use my knife and someone is like "Wow! Can I see that"? Then after they look at it they say "Hey, this is a very awesome knife but why does it say police on it.... you aren't a policeman". It makes me feel like they think I'm a wannabe.
