I know its a No-No but, has or does anybody store their high carbon (non-stainless) or 01 tool steel blades in their leather sheaths?

If so, what protectant do you use and what sort of patina or rust problems have you seen..

Thanks.

The best advice is: Don't do it. If you have to, try the Sentry Solutions Tuf-Cloth or Marine Tuf-Cloth. Then, check your knives often.

Depends where you live. If you live in a really dry climate then there isn't much problem, although it's wise to coat the blades with some kind of protectant (mineral oil, BreakFree, TuffCloth, etc.). If you're in a climate where the leather sheaths can absorb moisture, then it's better not to store them in the sheath. I treat all my leather sheaths with SnowSeal, which helps prevent them from absorbing moisture which would in turn rust the blades, but it's not 100% effective. I've had light rust on blades so stored after three days of rain, while on hunting trips (I usually carry my blades in a daypack).

what kind of finish does corrosionx, tuff cloth etc.. leave on the blade. do they still look nice or is the blade streaky, smeary and generally crappy looking. i dont want my blades to corrode but, i dont want to look at em and want to constantly polish em either.

...If so, my response would be "Don't do it!"

I did, and it was a costly mistake! Thank goodness I caught them with just a few minor gray spots, and RMK was able to clean them up at $35 per knife...

We use Renaissance Wax now, wipe on, wipe off. Sentry solutions makes a great 'Micro fiber' cloth for this...it doesn't scratch the finish.

I lined the inside of my carry sheath with White Lightning lubricant. Works like a charm.

I have 2 carbon blades, one is in "storage" as it is part of my collection. Actually, it IS my collection! I collect military and fighting knives, and my collection so far is a ka-bar short. I coat the blade in mineral oil and wrap it in wax paper. I'll re-oil it once a month.
