Well I have been wanting some new leather for my Farmhand for quite a while. I do love the knife but am not big on traditional vertical sheaths. I finally jumped in and tried this one. Few new techniques to me.

This is my first time dealing with antiquing gel, which I had issues with. I always had pre dyed scraps before...
First time trying to properly burnish edges rather than just using edge treatment, pretty happy with results...
First time using a Sam Brown button, which I definitely am happy with...
and first time using a liner, which turned out ok...

Overall I really like it so far as a user. It rides high and tight on my belt which makes Chicagoans not overreact because they don't see it as long as I don't tuck in my shirt. The knife is super secure but can be drawn with either hand. It doesn't get in the way when getting in and out of cars and such. I did have a problem with the leather splitting when I was stitching it. Almost like it was too dry and cracking. On to the pictures. Please feel free to throw out any constructive criticism. I am still very new with leather and learning a ton lately and made several mistakes that will not happen again. :D

You didn't mention it, so I hope there is a welt installed to protect that stitch line from the business side of that knife.

The cracking you mentioned comes from the leather drying out because of age or being exposed to abnormal heat, or both.

Remember this: "The most expensive leather you can buy is the cheapest leather you can find". Think about that the next time it starts to crack, or won't oil evenly, or won't absorb the dye evenly, or any of the other things that will ruin a piece during or after completion.

You design is good and you are off to a good start, so keep at it!

Yes there is a welt in it.

As far as the leather being too dry, probably from age, I bought it a while ago. Is there a preferred way to help moisten to work with it? Spritz of water like when stamping? Leave in bathroom during showers to let the humidity soak in? Maybe dye it and neetsfoot oil before working with it then just do touch up later?
