did anyone else see the history channel show conquest monday night about gladiators?? the thracians used a knife in the "games" which looked to me very much like a modern day kuhkri knife, called a "sica" i think.

didnt have a clue the design was THAT old, a great knife, dont know if i would wanna face a guy w/a long sword w/one though, lol, they supposedly liked to face off 2 guys w/dissimalar equipment, ie shrt knife vs long knife, lotsa armor/no armor, etc

Yea...but they got it all wrong!!!! They called it a specialized thrusting weapon ROFLMAO

The Romans were great borrowers from other cultures. They take what works and leave the rest. The "sica" was a "borrowed" blade, like many others, from the Greeks. The Greeks called it the Kopis. It is believed that the Kukri is descended from this as well, since Alexander traveled/conquered his way as far east as India.

Interesting show. For us now and for them in their time. If something works, I guess the old saying is true, don't fix it.
I also enjoy the Ol' Gunny on "Mail Call." Remember him from "Full Metal Jacket"?Standing in his underware and Drill Sgts. hat, right before a crazed marine shot him.
