I picked up one of these in a trade. I asked the owner and he didn't know, so how can I tell if it is 1095 or ATS-34? It is black coat. Plain edge. TIA,

Black finishes indicate 1095 carbon steel. For corrosion resistance of course. And the satin finish models are ATS34.

Nakano,
Thank you. That makes sense. I guess I have not seen the satin version.....What does the 1095 sell for new?

Do a search on this subject. There were some ATS34 versions released with the Black T coating. I think the logo is on the opposite side of the knife IIRC.

I love my Hobbit Fangs and Utilities.

They both come with black finishes. The 1095 has the "eye" on the left side of the blade (edge facing down), and the ATS-34 has it on the right side.
The prices I've seen have been $35-40 for the 1095, and about $30 more for the ATS-34 (those are online prices). I bought the 1095 version a few months ago.
