******From the October, 2006 Knifemaker's Hog Hunt*******

What an adventure...I think I have finally finished recovering...

Anyway, here is a little write-up and some pics to boot. I'll start with some general stuff...and add more pics as I go (including the ever-important knife content :o).

Thanks for looking!

The Hunters:

Tom Krein
Craig Camerer
Jon & Josh Graham
Luc Burnley
Daniel Koster
ThomasJ (honorary cut-up )

The Location:

Uvalde, Texas

The Guides:

Dan Moody and David Perkins

The Graham Brothers left first on Sunday morning, followed by Luc, Dan & Tom early Monday morning. Craig caught a sleepy flight in on Monday afternoon, and was picked up by Thomas already enroute.

Everyone arrived Monday evening in time for a late dinner at The Lodge.

A large pork dinner and lots of chatter later...folks start heading for bed...but the anticipation for the next day's hunt kept most of us awake!

Early the next morning we headed for the open range.

DSCF0017.jpg

But before we get too far...let's take a minute to introduce the real workers behind the hunt....the DOGS!!!

Here are a few:

HogHunt028.jpg

HogHunt009.jpg

HogHunt011.jpg

The last one is a "bay dog" (black mouth cur) - they are used to find and corner the hogs. They go out 3 or 4 at a time...sniffing around until a scent is found. Once the hog is cornered they bark like crazy to let us know their location.

The top two are "catch dogs". They are not released until they are within 15-25 yards of the hog. Pit Bull Terriers as well as Dogo Argentinos make good catch dogs. They latch on an ear/nose/lip and keep the hog distracted just long enough to make the stick.

It's easy for STHF when hog-hunting...so each dog is equipped with a GPS locator collar just in case they break loose and get lost.

(continued...)

These are feral hogs with 2-4" long tusks! So, the catch dogs wear kevlar vests to prevent nasty pokes.

DSCF0023.jpg

The bay dogs aren't supposed to get too close...but sometimes they can't help themselves...and can end up getting cut.

HogHunt001.jpg

Thankfully, we had a ER nurse on staff. It looks worse than it really was...couple days in the kennel and he was back up-n-running.

These dogs live to hunt...they practically whine and beg to go with us. The enthusiasm was indeed catchy...

Here are the Graham brothers and Luc Burnley with some catch dogs...eagerly awaiting the sound of the bay dogs' barking.

First up was Thomas - what a sport!

The action happened so fast, we hardly had time to get any pics...had to catch up with Thomas draggin' his boar out of the thicket on his own!

Glamour Shot:

Up next was Craig Camerer. The thicket was so thick we could hardly get in to take pics. But no question that Craig got-'er-done!

HogHunt029.jpg

Last up - Daniel Koster

After about an hour-and-a-half of walking and searching, we loaded back up in the truck and started down a path when we saw a spotted boar only 20 feet off the side of the truck! Bay dogs were released and catch dogs dispatched.

Craig and Dan with their hogs:

HogHunt017.jpg

Three hogs in one day and only one canine injury. Not bad! Time to head home for some rest...whew!

(continued....)

Up early the next morning and back out into the brush.

Took some searching and rootin around, but the bay dogs managed to round up 3 hogs at once.

Josh was first up:

Then Jon with one deep in the thicket:

Last up was Tom Krein....practically jumping out of his pants with excitement:

The disbelieving crowd from Tom's point of view:

LOL!!!

Tom was in top form when he got his hog:

Group shot after picking up Jon's Hog:

HogHunt021.jpg

Day 2 wrapped up with 3 hogs down (just like the day before).

Last one up was Luc Burnley who went for two lil' hogs instead of one biggun. But Luc wasn't satisfied with the two-for-one challenge...he accepted a deal to do it at night in the dark!
First hog was taken deep in the muddy bottom of a small creek:

Second one in the middle of a field after probably a half-mile walk....

IMG_0427.jpg

Look at him go!

We finished up around 2AM Friday morning.

Overall a successful hunt - with a great bunch of guys!

HogHunt025.jpg

And a heckuva good time to boot!

Thanks for lookin'!!

And now that all the formal pics have all been shown.... :boogie:

...I wonder what went on "in between" the hunts....! :eyeburn:

:eeek:

Well.....let's see:

There were these buzzards you see....

DSC01228.jpg

And we HAD to go check it out....

Oh....and look, there's a river down there!

062_63.jpg

Well...maybe we should let the pics speak for themselves:

?!?!??!?!??!

And the poor guides had no idea what to expect from a bunch of hardy knifemakers when it came time for skinning the hog...

It all started out harmless enough... :eyeburn:

HogHunt004.jpg

Dan Moody even got most the way down the shoulder removing the "shield" and head for a shoulder mount....

HogHunt005.jpg

DSCN1023.jpg

But Luc could hold back no longer and just HAD to test his knife on some fresh hog bone!

HogHunt006.jpg

THWACK!!! (see the dismembered bone on its way into the bucket?!!!)

Then there was some downright butcherin later on!!!

Jon couldn't take it anymore and started extolling the virtues of finer hog appreciation to us....:haha:

HogHunt022.jpg

(now I'm in trouble....:D)

Tom Krein cut loose on my spotted hog like a crazy ape-man!

Jon opted for a beer...

DSCF0043.jpg

Tom cut the heart out to see the wound.

In one side...

IMG_0099.jpg

And out the other...

IMG_0100.jpg

I was happy to see that!

And then there was this business about those with rings in their blades...

What a bunch of idiots! Check out what this obvious moron who don't know nuthin' bout knives and knifemakin' did to himself!!!

HogHunt015.jpg

Guess all those nay-sayers were right...better not have a ring in your hog-huntin' blade...that hog might spin around and you'll break your finger off....

Well, I guess I should've listened.....

NOT!!!! :eeek:

HogHunt016.jpg

cajones! :D

The main point of the whole thing was for some knifemakers to get a chance to put their own knives to the test. Kind of like the cutting competitions they have at the Blade Show...but with one important distinction...

The Rope Don't Try to Gore Ya!!!

You are obviously a crazy bunch of fellows!! :D

And I mean 'crazy' in the best possible way. :)

Why make a knife if you're not willing to use it, eh?

Nicely done. Those are some good-looking dogs.

Skinning a hog, especially a dirty one, is a good test of a knife.

So did anyone have to sharpen his knife before he finished skinning his hog?:D

so, wuz the ring effective? in the way? mmm.

looks like you lost an eye though ;)

bladite

Yes, blue indigo snake.

bladite - the ring performed exactly as expected: adding retention and control. Not for everybody, but worked perfectly for me!

Great pics and post Dan
We had a blast, and I will also add that the ring worked well on my knife as well. My ring was in a simmilar place as Dan's knife and I very much liked it.

I must admit I have never been hunting a day in my life...but that looks like a blast! Coming here from england a few years ago I had a pretty negative view on hunting to start with, but now that I've been here a little while and know a little bit about it, all of the ethical issues I once had are long gone. I cant wait to go myself sometime. Pig tags are pretty cheap too right?

Good on you guys!
Matt.

wish i could have been the one to baptize u all!!:)

All you need is a hunting liscense there is no season or bag limit on feral pigs.

And someone to come with me to show me how its done. I hear those pigs can be pretty brutal, especialy if you have no idea what you are doing! :)
