Ok here is the deal i have a bench grinder and a 1"by 30" belt sander, and a sears water wheel is there any way to make hollow ground blades with these tools? I have made quite a few good fixed blade knives and soon i will have made my first lock back folder I am hoping to give the blade a good hollow ground but if no one answers this I guess it will have to be the old wedge blade again.

Howdy There...!
You certainly can hollow grind on your craftsman grinder. The very first hollow ground blade I ever made was on a Craftsman 6" 1/3 hp grinder, with a six inch stone. I must say that it did take a little while to get it ground, but I wasn't in any hurry anyway. It is a good way to start learning to hollow grind, the only restriction that you may have is with the lenght of the blade that you can grind. The stones are very far out from the motor and it may cause you some problems on a longer blade. Good luck and go for it.:D

You can but!! I made a few on an 8in hard wheel.
But it was dirty work an a lot off hand work
to clean things up.
:grumpy:

OK SO HOW WOULD I KEEP THE BLADE GRINDINGS EVEN ON BOTH SIDES I HAVE TRIED A FEW WITH VERY LITTLE SUCESS AT KEEPING THE THEM EVEN

do just exactly the same as you did on the other side
that may sound numb, but that's the challenge
put a stone on the other side of the grinder
practice practice practice
my first was on a 36" stone grinder and I have used 8"
bench grinders,, like Sylvester said you'll have a
lot of hand work to do
but it can come out to be very nice.
being ambidextrous helps a lot too..:)

Um do I need the grinding sheilds and the tool rest to do this because I dont have them anymore. I have the grinder turned around for sharpening.

I also would like to know if there is anything I could use for a contact wheel to make my own bigger belt sander and I trying to go about it the cheap way right now I have to save money for the wedding and all.

you can make something to shield the dust from your face
some guys use a rest some don't, I free hand.

you can get a collapsible rubber 8" wheel and buy the belts for that

I used one for a while, The one I have is 8"x 1" 5/8" shaft hole
I believe..
if your interested I can sell it to you, it's not the best thing to
use but it's a lot better than a stone grinder.

this wheel expands against the belt holding it in place.
once you stop it you can change the belt, just slip it off
and on with a new one.

if your interested, e-mail me and I'll see what I have for belts
left for it and dig up the info for getting more belts for it.
