Holy Mackerel!!

Certainly is a big fish! I hate seeing people take breeders out of the water though, especially one so old. I always catch and release unless I intend to eat the fish I catch. Great fish nonetheless.
 
Man that is huge. We don't have anything like that in the fresh water around here. Thanks for posting.

Firstly, thanks for posting, it's a fantastic fish and I'd love to try bow fishing.

That been said, it's a 50yr old fish and despite there been lots of pictures on google of similar sized gars, they are becoming rarer and rarer. Habitat destruction, aggressive hunting and invasive fish species are causing the decline.

The bow hunter in question is entitled to do what he wants, I mean no ill will to him.
But, for me it throws up some moral questions.

If he wanted to feed people he could've shot one of the 5 males and not the huge female.
With the breeding female gone what do you think will happen?
In other forms of hunting his way of thinking would be seen as destructive and selfish.

If I had the money to own a fishing boat, and have the time to be alerted to big fish, then I would've been certain of the weight of the fish and I would've had it mounted as a keep sake.
 
Big un. Alligator Gar are nothing to sneeze at!

He will regret for life the decision to grab the filet knife, and cut it up.

World record would have been cool!
 
The mature females lay up to 138,000 eggs at a time during spawn which, from the description, is what had happened when this one was caught. They are not considered rare in Texas where this one was taken, not even regulated as a sportfish. If it was near end of the species' 50 year lifespan, it was near the end of it's usefulness as a breeder. I see no problem with his taking the fish. It is a shame he didn't get it entered into the records, but bon appetit!

When my wife caught a big female Halibut in Alaska the captain asked her to take a picture and release it. We only kept the 20-40 lbs. fish.


Those gar, here in Missouri, are not a game fish either. No limits. They do have 2 nice pieces of meat --backstraps. Very good eating "if" you know how to cut them up.
 
Yup, Short nose and long nose Gar in MN. These fish are prehistoric; I have scales that I found in the same bed as a T-Rex. I think they will be here long after I'm gone.
 
I live in a place called gar creek, got the longnose ones everywhere. There's no way in hell you can clean one of those suckers with a fillet knife, the scales are thicker than the jolly green giants big ugly toenails it's like armor :D
