This is one of thoes home made projects that worked out right. Didn't cost much, dosen't take much room to store and runs fine. The motor is 1/2 horse washing machine. I scrounge what I can and buy the rest. Hope it helps someone out. This thing is so simple it nearly hurts. If I can answer any questions fire away. And yes it collects sanding dust, but gets blown out using compressed air.

Nice little rig!!
Tracy Dotson has a disc sander thats horizontal and it turns nice and slow.Calls it a lapping machine. He drilled a couple holes in the plate and drilled corresponding holes in some 3/4" plywood discs. He put bolts or pins in the plywood discs so he can set them onto the plate. He puts different grit paper on each plywood discs and when he needs a different grit, he just lifts the plywood disc off the sander and puts the one with the right grit on. I keep meaning to make one myself.

Take care!! Michael

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

Glenn, thanks, that's very clear and should be easy to duplicate. I was about to ask where to get the disk, but then remembered someone else's suggestion to get the model number off a Craftsman machine and order the part from Sears. Sure!

I think I'd want to slow it way down, too, I'm hooked on slow grinding speed.
