Hoodlum as collector knife ... or just use it?

Hello gang!

I've got a buck hoodlum that is one of the origional runs. So the side says "Hoods Woods" on the side instead of "Ron Hood". My question is the first run knife with Hoods Woods worth keeping as a collector item since it's part of the first run and pick up a newer hoodlum for the outdoors work and take care of the first run knife? Or should I take it out backpacking and show it some love as a woods knife? Does anyone think the first run knife could be a collectors item someday?

Thanks!

Here's my take on it. When it was first announced I figured it might end up being a somewhat short lived or low production model like say the 651 Pigsticker or the Buck/Strider models so I wanted one more from a collector standpoint than as a user. After Ron Hood passed away a few months ago I figured it might, for what ever reason either be dropped or increase in popularity which put it, for me at least further into the collector category.

Were I in your position I'd probably keep the one you have as a collector item as IMHO it should be worth a premium over a later production model in like condition. If for no other reason than the fact that fewer of them were made. Just my two cents but I'd buy another one if I really wanted one for actual use.

Yep, good excuse to buy another.
I didn't understand the distinction though. Would someone please clarify to me how
to tell the difference between an earlier and later one?

Dittos with Badhammer and Flush on this one, get another and put this one away for a rainy day.

Cheers,
Serge

From what I've seen the first production is stamped Buck Knives and Hoods Woods on the blade. Later/current production is stamped Buck Knives and Ron Hood. There might be some other more subtle differences. In another thread it was discussed about some knives having Ron Hood's signature on the box. Don't recall if that was with a Hoods Woods or a Ron Hood marked model?

Yep ... here are a couple of photos, not my knives though, I swiped them from google images.

This is the first run knife with Hoods Woods.

I agree with the general consensus here.

I have four Hoodlums....two original keepers and two of the newer model, one keeper and one user.

I REALLY like the way the Hoodlum feels in my hand!

Pictures are great. I see now what is being said about the difference in the labeling. I note that both versions have a 2011 date code so they're not that far apart timewise. One other difference I see in the picture is that the Ron Hood knife has a "0060" model number and the Woods Hoods knife has an "060" model number. Was the box, sheath, or anything else different?

FWIW the Hoodlum is back up on the Buck website and appears to be available. Look under "New Products"

Just thought I would share this tidbit about the new Hoodlum.

I wasn't expecting the package just yet but it came a couple days ago.
When I opened it and showed the monster to the wife, she took one look and started telling me all about it, even down to the micarta handles and about the notch, and then that Ron Hood had passed away.

Blew me away to say the least. She has taken a fairly active interest in my knives before, but had no idea she was that up to date on the Hood.

She finally told me, after my blank look, that there was a piece about it and RH on one of the outdoor channels that she had seen.

It is an amazing knife, as well as is the sheath. I do wish it had some sort of interlock that grabbed the blade tho. But really happy with it.

I am surprised at how much larger than the pig sticker it is. And it makes the 650 Night Hawk and the 890650 look small.

I finally got a chance to use one of my Hoodlums today.

I always liked the feel of that knife in my hand, today I like it even more. I am in Vermont for another week or so and had a chance to go out on the Appalachian Trail and do some trail work. I cleaned up a partially overgrown one mile section of that trail....trimming lots of maple, pine and hemlock branches that were growing into the foot path.

It took me a short while to get used to the best way to chop, but I got pretty good at it and had a great day.

The only problem was at dinner tonight. I had a hard time holding onto my glass of water. It would take me a few days to get used to doing manual labor again. :)

I didn't think I would like the sheath very much, but I actual do like it now that I've had a chance to put it to use. I got to where I could sheath the Hoodlum without looking when I had to move larger parts of dead-fall trees from the trail. It also rode nicely on my side.

Ha!! So you are in Vermont too and have seen the trail work I did yesterday. :)

I wonder how he got his name?

It doesn't have anything to do with careless knife handling....even though I have to admit it's a strange name on a knife forum. :D

Most people that have hiked on the Appalachian Trail for any time at all pick up "trail names". Mine is "Stumpknocker". I got that name because in the beginning of my long distance backpacking I kept accidentally kicking little stumps in the trail....and I wear softer road running shoes when I backpack. The long toe on each foot got sore from the stumps I was kicking. ( I have since gotten better at walking the Trails)

I tried registering on this site as "Stumpknocker", but that name had already been taken. A lot of my friends call me "Stump", so I tried registering under that name and it was already taken. I was able to register under the name of "Stumps", which is close enough to what most friends call me anyway.

My given name is Mark though.

Ok......well, it's pretty impressive work, anyhow......and that Hoodlum must be a great chopper to stand up to all that work.

Now take a break!!!

:D
