Hopefully Helpful--O-rings and Investigators

Recently it has come up, so I thought I'd post to get the conversation started.
I have been playing with different sizes of o-rings on these pens.
First, for pocketing these little guys and for cap retention--smaller, snugger fitting o-rings are what I like.
Some people may want to "fatten" the grip, so you can go with larger o-rings (or some that differ from a round profile).

Enough word here are some pics.

Variety;
On Green, some larger, square profile o-rings I had around and put on for test fit. Make the pen a bit too fat for my liking, but some may like it.
On Brass, a variety of smaller round o-rings in two sizes--the size I will show in a photo, and one a size larger (unsure of exact size, but it is #6 to the pic #5)
On Black, my preference for pocketing, pic specifies the size.

To help in placing them where you want them, a small piece of plastic, or perhaps, a popsicle stick can he handy.

N2K, This thread addresses an oft asked question, the details AND install "tips" greatly appreciated.
Very Cool, Thank you:thumbup:

No problem.
This is the type of stuff I like to post (when I can) and see in the forums. Information that may be beneficial.

nice little post. i think i am going to try this on my extreme duty pen that i just got. i'll see if the same size O-rings would give a good fit as well.

I just wanted to bump this because I just did it to mine. I bought two packs of rings and did my copper and aluminum investigators. I didn't think I would like it from the pics but its fantastic. I have rough dry fingers alot and this keeps the edges from digging into my skin. Plus it adds just enough girth to make the pen feel a little bit bigger.

"old" and "Great"...thanks Rubi.

I wish the OP had taken better photos..oh wait...my bad..lol

I guess informative; shot quick and dirty, are still...well...informative.

Glad any and all inspired by this thread or by the idea of o-rings that predates my thread...like the simple and comfortable addition these little o-rings can add.

just go one step up. I don't remember # but in the assortment i bought, i just used the next slot over. so either a 6 or 7

Thank you!

It's the kind of thing you play with a bit to find what's "right" for you. The O-rings from the plumbing section of a hardware store shown as size #5 in my earlier photo have a larger diameter that I'd like on some occassions. And I'm speaking to the dimensions of the o-ring itself, not the hole in its center or circumference.

I put some of these o-rings (from this thread) onto an Extreme Duty and they were snug, so snug many have broken off. But I break the o-rings off my lanyards too, I'm not too gentle with my gear...it's how I discovered Hinderer in the first place.

Brass Investigator Pen has #9 O-Rings

Green Extreme Duty Pen Aluminum has #11 O-Rings

I broke two while putting them on. #12 would probably be better for the Extreme. Who knows though, I went to two hardware stores and they each had different sizing numbers...

My Lunchtime project that N2K inspired. I used a coffee stirrer that I split with my XM spanto (be careful if you choose to do this) I thought the inside radius would be helpful (dunno)

I had ALL the o-rings on the swizle and pushed the pen through them and positioned

Pulled the stick out (one side at a time and WaLa. I may do both ends because my pals webbing is getting shredded with taking the pen in/out. FYI - O-Rings $ 0.49 a piece (6 on the writing end and 4 on the other)

^^Neat method. Thanks for the recognition.

I've got my pens in many o-ring/ non-o-ring configurations currently...depends on where/how I carry them. O-rings stick very well inside my pockets so the Investigator is kept secure. I really reccomend the o-ring for cap retention, all others are a personal preference.

This worked the Best!

Agreed N2K. Have them both ways with and without on my Investigators (none on my Extreme Duty) I think I squeeze my Investigators harder.
Love these pens! They are to my pen World what my XM is to my knife World - Dominant.

Which size did you use Rubicon?

If memory serves, I used 5/16x3/16x1/16 (which if my math is correct is ever so slightly different from N2K's) probably due to what was available at my local store, which only had loose available. Both sizes would work, I imagine N2K's o-ring size would have been slightly more padded which would be better IMO.
Again, I write with mine everyday (still on original ink) I love my Investigator pens!

It's kinda of a try this or that and see what works best for you. I have removed the o-rings (except the one that assists in cap security) from my brass around-the-house Investigator, but o-rings are still installed on all my other Investigator pens.
