Hopefully, my first: Elishewitz/Pirela Sensei!

I'm about to enter the exciting but scary, wife's-gonna-kill-me world of custom knives. I'm really nervous and I need a little advice.

Short background:
I just started the whole knife obsession about four months ago and I never thought I'd own a custom any time soon. Sure enough, I saw the Elishewitz Sensei and it knocked me on my ass. I looked around for quite a bit and couldn't find the damn thing anywhere. Of course, it just made me want it more.

Then I saw it on Pete's Tactical Knives. I e-mailed him and he said he'd work with me on a payment plan. How cool is that!? I never thought that would happen.

Now, unlike many professionals here on bladeforums, I make a very meager income. But, by being "such a typical male" as my wife puts it, I couldn't let the opportunity pass. So today, I applied and was accepted for a second job. A second job for a single knife. Oh good God, it's hopeless.

This will be my fifth knife, and the others all together cost about 1/7th of this one.

Questions:
* I'm a knife virgin. If for any reason I need to sell it, what's the typical loss on reselling a custom knife?
* I plan on using it, and I expect that it'll be roughed up sooner or later. What's the standard turnaround time and cost on light repair?
* I'll just come out and ask: is this a good deal!?

Sorry about going on for so long. I'm so nervous I'm shaking.

Thanks in advance,
Zero

I'd rather discuss the pricing "off-forum" so email me but yer taking a bath (I don't want to see no virgins get burnt)

Zero,

I hope your entry into the world of custom knives is as rewarding as it has been for most here.

As Ferret remarked, we don't get into the specifics of pricing and fair market value here on this forum so as not to end up "tar and feathering" folks (justly or unjustly).

I'm sure that members here will be willing to provide guidance and expertise via email or other channels if you request it.

Good luck whichever way you decide to pursue your passion.

You have picked a great knife to start your voyage into the realm of custom knives. I did not see this thread in time to see how much you are paying for it, but I hope you are not being charged to high a premium because you are getting it from a dealer. If you are interested in my opinion on this matter, please feel free to email me with the amount you are paying. I have dealt with Joel in the past and have a pretty good idea what he charges for his knives.

Regardless of what you do you obviously have impeccable taste. That's one of the nicest ones that I've ever seen. I made a similar move and hindsight being 20/20, it was an exceptional one. It'll be a bad one, though, if my wife ever finds out what I spent (it was worth every penny, though). As a result I pay even more attention to being a great husband and father so that I'll have a defense if I do get caught.

Thanks for the compliment, AnklePocket. Unfortunately, I've decided to back out for now for several reasons. It'll probably be a few months before I get the jones and my wife threatens to kill me again ;)

Pirela's designs get me excited...almost aroused. Something about those handles. Brad Duncan and Reese Weiland have the same effect.

AnkleP--thanks for providing me with another good strong rationalization for collecting blades. Why didn't I think of it--it's making me a better husband and father. Of course!

I recall the late and sorely missed James Mattis sharing the mantra he came up with after in the blink of an eye he found he'd collected maybe 8 or more fine Himalayan Import khukuris which he couldn't possibly find practical use for in L.A.: "Please don't let her see them all at once, please don't let her see them all at once..."

They don't know. Am I the only one the pillow-talks his knives? My wife just got over my whole Rachel Weisz obsession, so please don't tell her.

Atomic,

I have to be out of my mind! Then ,well it isn't so bad! Jeez, Jim, knock that off, you'll ruin my rep.

(Where do I send the check? ;))

Jim, I think what's the scary part. Once you know what you're CAPABLE of spending with a little patience and saving, you can pretty much afford anything! That and that niggling "second job" thing.

And whether it's Blues, Ferret, etc., someone here is always willing to give advice and it's almost always good. You guys have a good community going here, and I'm glad to be a part of it.
