Ok for you three guys with the Horseman folders here that are coming up I have an update.

Jon since this is your folder, or well, it is yours I'm working on currently I'll be addressing this with you first.

Shown below is how far I got before I realized something. Note this is the first Horseman I've had a request for and although three are here currently its the first three all in a row. Rare I know but none the less its the case. So, to get to the point.

Note the stop pin hole. I don't like it. The reason I don't like it is because of how close to the edge or corner it is and this is before I bevel the edge to round it off. Fact is there is not enough room there to bevel it because soon as I do the bevel will go off into the recess of the hole on the lock side. What this means is that the rattle cure for the stop is likely not going to be possible on your folders. In other words I will be doing all three of these slabs over if the bevel is exposing that flat head phillips screw on the lock side even though all three are cut out ready to use and this one as you can see is moving right along with all the holes drilled out and threaded, recessed and near final finishing. Its scrap as it sits here if the bevel intrudes into the stop recess though. The new ones will have to be set up with the original stop pins should this be the case. My apologies if this is an inconvenience or disappointment for you but this may not fly.

Anyway, back to the drawing board on this one. That is how firsts are sometimes. The first 14s I did gave me fits too until I worked out all the bugs so to speak. The Commander was the same way, CQC13, 8, 15 and, Military from Spyderco, Blur from Kershaw and so on. Firsts can sometimes be a pain in the rump and you never know what I'll run into! That is the case here as well. Rest assured I'll eat this as its not your fault and just part of the risk I take. I just wanted to let you all know at the same time what the hold up is and why. Once I get new slabs done, after I get the stuff in the mail to do them I'll let you know. Monday is order day so for now thats the situation. Stay with me a little longer. I'm going to be moving on these just as soon as the materials to do so arrive. Thanks.

You know I just went to the shop out of curiosity, and just to see if I was right and went ahead and beveled the slab and cleaned it up as usual. While it is close and did slightly touch on the screw area for the replacement stop it did surprise me in how little in actually overlapped. Certainly not as I'd pictured it. I did hold back some on how wide I made the bevel along the spine of the folder and that helped.

Anyway, its actually workable I think so this is one of those times where I may be wrong and jumped the gun. It sure looked like it was going to be a problem area though. I fully expected the head of the flat head screw to overhang and be visible on these and its not. In fact its normal looking at least on this one. If I can manage to pull this off on the other two I will be very pleased that its not scrap after all.

Stay tuned I'm still checking some things and deciding on this. I think its possible if I do each one exactly the same. Right now I'm still looking at other possibilities on this model that would put me in a little bit more of that safer zone from encroaching on the outside border. Specifically what that means is I'm looking into just whether or not I can maybe slightly reposition the stop pin hole down some moving away from the spine toward the lock more and get the pin away from that edge more without the blade bumping it or needing to do much in the way of adjustment but I'd rather not go that route. The other thing I'm checking into for future models is having my own custom stop pins made that are threaded for 2-56 screws just like the rear flat head phillips screws that come on your Emersons from the factory. If so I may still elect to do that at least on future models after these three are done, and actually if I can get a good price and buy what I want in bulk I may just change that to be the standard for all future models.

It is about as close as it can get and not be out of tolerance and as I said it did go into the recess for the flat head some albeit very little. Here, see for yourself.

I don't quite understand what is going on...but I know STR will work through it somehow and make us some beautiful knives!

Steve,
It looks good to me:thumbup:. If you like it I'm sure I'll like it..
Jon

Yeah I think I'm going to run with these as they are but yours is the one up now so tomorrow I'll be resuming where I left off on it today. If I have my way it will be knocked out tomorrow or damn close Jon. So hopefully if everything goes as I 'd like it will be ready to ship out to you early next week sometime. We'll see. No promises yet but we'll know soon. ;)
