An air force friend of mine was promoted recently and as a perk he got a backseat ride in an F-15. He asked if I would like to come along, probably as a formality as he knew my answer already. When I arrived on base his flight had been aborted as the two seat, all weather, birds had been deployed to a hot spot. However all was not lost.
The Portland 142nd fighter wing is an Alert One air base and, as such, is on 24 hour, 365 day alert status to protect the west coast.
Two F-15s can be air-born in just under 3 minutes, from alarm to air, at any time day or night.
They run practice alerts randomly to keep there game sharp and as luck would have it I was there when they launched.
They take off in full after burner and can be to 30,000 feet in 60 seconds.
