How deep does it have to be to get stitches...

Ok guys I just gashed my stomach pretty bad when I slipped with a chisel. I'm wondering how deep it has to be in order to need stitches... Funny thing is it's not bleeding all that bad, maybe 2 or 3 drops but it's pretty "open"... I tried google but apparently I'm not searching right lol :D

Edit: ...and yes I feel like a jackass for asking :p

Obviously don't take anything any of us say for "what you should do".

I hope you're OK.

You mean a regular chisel?

I would say if it's like an 1/8th inch deep you'd be fine. If it's 1/4 inch deep it'd be bleeding like crazyness. How long is the gash?

I'm thinking you may need stitches if it's "pretty open" but then again I've seen guys on a construction site cut about 1/4 inch into their finger about an inch long and they clean it and bandaid it and tape it up almost imediately. After about 24 hours it's almost closed again.

If you can see muscle or any subcutaneous tissue you most likely need stitches.

I prefer the medicinal grade superglue though. you can do it yourself and it costs a lot less than a trip to the ER. irrigate with saline, iodine swab the area, blah blah blah.

of course, with health insurance the hospital might not look so bad.

Haha if I have to ask.. You're probably right, it's about 1/4" deep and 1.5" long but not bleeding much. I put a bandaid on it with some neosporin. I just had a tetinus shot when I got stitches for my finger, cut it on a can of beans like 6 months ago so no biggy. Speaking of tin cans, tell your wives and girlfriends not to friggin' toss sharp cans with hanging lids in the trash! Pushed some garbage down when I was gonna take it out and slice... :p

Anyways, thanks for the help.. I'm such a jackass :D

I was going to trash ya for even asking, if you think you need to go to the ER, go, man. My father is just like that, my mother or I have to literally drag him out of the house if he gets injured, I think the only time he went willingly was when an engine crushed his hand  . So you pay a couple bucks on an unnecessary bill, better than getting gangrene and dying!

Son of a bitch I just did it again, but I stabbed my left hand, slipped with the same chisel. This one needs stitches but well I'm deathly afraid of doctors and hospitals in general, and needles... You would never guess it because both my arms, legs, and my back is all tattooed but crap I'm just really not wanting to go to the ER... :(

I'm not having good luck today.

Edit: Screw this I'm going to the hospital, uhg :( :( :(

I think when you go to the hospital with "multiple self-inflicted lascerations" you may leave with a "why suicide is not the right choice" pamphlet. ;)

Seriously though, I hope you get patched up good as new.

Why in the world would you ask a bunch of knife nuts what you should do? You already knew what needed to be done. Posting on the American medical review boards forum would've been just as crazy, you might get some knife nuts there too :D . Good luck man.

The way I figure it... Depends on your health plan.

Being a soldier, once my vital were determined to be present, I could count on waiting 3-4 hours. Then I'd likely be given a 20-30 minute lecture on quiting smoking (even though I don't smoke). This would be followed by a 30 minute block of instruction on "Sensitivity Based Leadership." Once all these conditions were met, I'd be stiched up, issued a 4 day supply of 800mg Motrins, and be told to quit malingering, and sent back to the trenches.

I'd have to be cut up pretty bad to suffer all that.

If I were you, I'd already be in my car headed for Syracuse Community General Hospital. And I'd be reading this another day.

Remind me to stay away from you when you're playing with sharp things! :(

I'm afraid that I'll get cut from seeing this on the internet!

You did it again??

May I call you a dumb f**k now or should I wait until you do it a third time??

Maybe next time you slip with the chisel and perform a self-circumcision

and no, they don't put stitches in a pecker!!!

Hahaha well I'm back... They used this stuff called Dermabond, partly because I was freaking out over the needles. The nurses and doctor thought I was a nutcase because I kept telling them how I'm afraid of needles yet when I took my shirt off for the cut on my stomach they saw tattoos all over, yep lots of laughs at my expess lol. Anyways, I feel like a moron :D but at least I didn't need any shots or stitches!

Cuts, broken bones, etc don't really bother me...

The whole fear of hospitals and needles I think stems from when I was about 7 years old and had to stay a week in a hospital. I remember a little of it, mostly from what I was told. Anyways apparently I woke up late one night and I couldn't breath. So my dad rushed me to the hospital and long story short they put me in some kinda plastic tent for a week, and gave me shots and took blood like 10 times a day for a week. They said it must have been some kind of alergic reaction, but to what they didn't know. Another reason I don't like hospitals is because my mom is in them so often. I still live at home so I can take care of her, she's got a bunch of stuff wrong with her so yeah... In fact I was just at the hospital yesterday with her cause she had heart failure again on thursday. BAH!!!! :(

You're obviously under a lot of stress, stay out of your shop until you can get some rest. That's probably why you injured yourself twice, that, or clumsiness :D.

Yeah you're probably right.. I was just trying to pass the time and not think about all the crap that's going on, but it wasn't working and I probably wasn't paying enough attention to what was in front of me. I did however finish my first ball in cage last night w/o cutting myself.. I was trying to make another this morning when everything just seemed to go wrong. I didn't sleep last night so yeah I'm running on empty. I should just probably eat something and go to bed (not that I'm going to but it's a good thought).

I understand. I had an eye operation when I was 4 (had to go in and cut and rearrange the muscles so they would point forward instead of at the bridge of my nose) and was in the hospital for about 2 weeks. I also had a sadistic old-fart dentist who wouldn't wait til the novacane took effect and liked to stall the drill in my teeth while I was trying not to scream as the smoke was waifting out of my mouth towards the ceiling. Now I have a gut-level somatic fear of doctors and dentists. As a result, I rarely go unless I'm on the verge of death... otherwise it is like having a split personality... my mind is saying "this is rediculous! You have a really nice doctor now and he tries not to hurt you," but my body itself is saying "no way in hell am I getting within a mile of a hospital!" Traumatic experiences do that to you, I guess.

Oh man, don't get me started on Dentists, those crazy freaks get off on hurting people (no offence to any dentist here). Movies like Dr. Giggles, The Dentist 1 and 2, ack! They freak me out big time.
