This is something that's constantly nagging at me these days. My collection is now 26 knives. 3 are fixed blades, 3 are SAK's and the rest are folders.

When my collection was much smaller (5 or 6) I would store them in a fireproof safe hidden in my room. But then it grew and I started to store them all over the place such as jacket pockets in my closet, between shirts in the drawers and under my bed.

Now that I have more than that though it gets hard to keep track of them that way. Right now I have them all stored in a rubber maid container but am anxious to find a better way of storing them. A friend suggested a safety deposit box at the bank but I don't like that idea at all.

I cringe at the fact that they're all in the same place right now waiting for some burglar to steal them.

How do you guys store your collections? Any suggestions for me?

A (gun) safe. It was the best investment I ever made for my collections of guns/knives/wife's jewelery/important papers. It won't keep out a professional burglar but I belive he is busy in the rich part of town anyway. I have a "Golden Rod" in mine that keeps the humidity down in the safe to cut down on the heartbreak of rust (Golden Rod is nothing more than a 15W heating element).

My safe cost me a few bucks ($1100 delivered - I got a bargain) and it was QUITE the hastle to get installed (I was living in a 2nd story apartment when I first got it). But I can go away for the weekend certain that some junkie is not hawking my important stuff (he/she/it can have my VCR). Owning a safe has encouraged me to collect even more since I now have a "safe" place to put my items.

I consider my safe to be a one-time investment. I'm not likely to fill mine up unless I get rich, and if I get rich I'll just build a vault to hold my stuff.

I DO NOT consider the safe to be a piece of furniture so I skipped the shiny automotive finish and saved about $300-$400. I also don't have fancy lights or panneling on the inside. No one ever sees the inside of my safe except me.

Anyway, I highly recommend a safe. Good for keeping guns to, at least the ones I'm not using.

My wife gave me a nice solid wood tool chest last Christmas, I use it to store my knives and souvenirs from my travels.

If you have the $$$ check out the Gerstners - they're out of my price range but if you want the best they're it.

I would have to agree that a gun safe is the best option. just make sure to bolt it down if it is not to heavy to carry away. the good ones it is next two imposible to carry away with out a hand truck and a lift gate on your truck not to mention if a burgler was by themself they would never get it up the stairs if you put it in the basement. my father and I had enough trouble with ours and we are both fairly big guys. If you don't own guns it is just a good thing to have If you do own guns it is nothing less than nessesity.
