How do you feel about modifying production knives?

Specifically, I have a CRKT Polkowski/Kasper Companion. I really like the feel of this blade, however, I would like to be rid of the finger groove and also change the scales to a more grippy material. Would you, as a custom maker, be offended or put off if I approached you with such a request. What is a reasonable price for this kind of work? Thanks.

I would always modify a knife handle to fit my hand when I bought factory knives. A knife will feel better when you sand of what don't fit and fix it the way you want it. I would even narrow the area around the middle of the blade so I could open it with one hand, and this was 30 or 35 years ago. If you are not worried about the resale value, do it yourself and it will fit when you get done. Just do a little at a time because it wasn't practical to try to add any to the handle :). Don't be afraid to do it and it can be done before the other person can get it in the mail.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply (I'm the guy who asked you to bring the Hard Wirk for me to the Gulfport show; we're still on for that, right?).

What's the best way to remove that finger groove? The tang of the blade conforms to the scales (or vice versa) so metal would have to come off. Grinder, then Dremel, then sandpaper.

As for resale value, I don't give a hoot. I appreciate knives first for how they they work, then for how they look, etc. (hence the request for the Wirk :D )

Look forward to seeing you in G'port!
