How does ZDP-189 compares to S30V or VG10?

I read in the January 2005 Blade magazine on page 104, that the steel (ZDP-189) has 4 times the cutting performance of D2.

How does ZDP-189 compares to S30V or VG10?

Do you have any information to confirm or refute this statement?

And lastly, is Spyderco considering this steel in any of their knives?

Spyderco was talking about a test run with it at least a year back, but I haven't heard anything since.

In our testing for edge retention, ZDP was excellent. In there with S90V. Maybe double D2, not 4 times, IMO.

I recently bought 2 Spydercos (Ocelot and Stretch), and 3 Fallknivens (P1, U2, and the TK3) The Spydercos and the Fallkniven P1 all have VG10. I've been exceptionally pleased with the edge holding of VG10, and the edge geometry on the P1 is phenomenally good. The other two Fallknivens have their new(?) Super Gold Powder Steel (SGPS) which is a laminate of SGPS and V2 (according to their website). I've never seen edge holding like that before, although it is a bit of a bear to sharpen. I'm not sure how close the SGPS and ZDP189 are in composition, but both companies make similar claims to its performance. As far as the S30V steel, it's good, but I can't see a huge increase in performance over VG10 under practical use. The only S30V knife I have which seems to have good HT is a Chris Reeve Sebenza. It's a great edge-holding knife. HT is ultimately the ace in the hole for any steel. That's the very reason I quit buying Benchmades. They have great designs, and quality construction, but I never owned one that would hold an edge like it should. Spyderco seems to have much better HT. Edge geometry on the Spydercos is more hit or miss, but I never had one that wouldn't take and hold a decent edge.

ZDP blows everything else I've got out of the water when it comes to NIB sharpness and retention!

All my Spydies have been stunningly sharp out of the box - at least I thought so until I got my ZDP Caly - When I humbly realized that every time you think you it couldn't get any better, Sal & Company release another example of why we should never set limits. I don't think there is a prettier Calypso out there, and I know for sure that there isn't a sharper one.

Did I just limit myself again? :D

Does this mean ZDP will take shaper edge than VG-10? I am trying to decide which Delica to get.

One of the reasons for the Caly Jr. being so stunningly sharp OOB is that it is also ground relatively thin -- some guys were measuring about 12~13 deg/side (24~26 deg inclusive).

Both steels will sharpen to equal levels. The VG-10 is easier to sharpen, but dulls faster. I found that I had to make very light strokes on a Sharpmaker to get the ZDP to sharpen properly. I also had to sharpen one side first to get a burr, then get it on the otherside before moving up to finer stones. This is obviously my opinion/experience and YMMV.

If sharp is what you want, I would wait on the ZDP Delica. You will not be disappointed my friend!!!
