How is the Shallot as a manual flipper?

It's functional. I've had mine for four years and the thin design and lightweight profile means it gets carried a lot when I run, and then sometimes into the nearest river/pool/lake once the run is over. About a year ago the torsion bar broke (action got pretty rough, too), and I kept using it. Just took a little more wrist action than usual. Two months ago I opened the thing up, and, as expected, the insides were completely covered in rust. I removed the torsion bar, took as much rust off as I could with 400 grit sandpaper, and closed it back up.

It's smoother now, though not as smooth as when I first got it - I didn't do that careful of a job getting all of the rust out. But I can open it just using the flipper; no wrist action required. Blade is still centered, lockup is still solid, and it still comes with me when I go running. Pretty solid for a $55 knife that got carried as an edc for about two years and helped dress out a few deer along the way.

So, I guess what I'm trying to say is you should be fine, though the stop pin might give you trouble on disassembly/reassembly.

Honestly, if there's anything that surprises me about the Shallot, it's that there aren't more people singing its praises.

How is the detent? Does it ever open up in your pocket?

MAN that is a nice lookin' Shallot! That tears it. I'm gettin' a black Shallot!

Yeah, the black coating on the handle was getting a bit worn, so I took the sandpaper to the front scale after I got most of the rust out to try and make it look more uniform again, and now it's kind of a dark, burnished grey.

I'm a fan. :D

I just looked at a Shallot. There is a ball bearing pressed into the tip of the leaf/lock spring but no corresponding dimple in the blade. I find the assist quite useful. I bet Kershaw would fix it or send you a part. I particularly the S-110-V blade.

I actually asked Kershaw if they would modify my S110V Shallot and put that dimple in mine cause I had issues with a torsion bar breaking prematurely. They told me it would void that warranty and they don't do that kind of work, shot down.

I would just try and put the detent dimple in the blade myself, but I don't want to mess it up and make it so it doesn't work well at all and void the warranty in the process.

Has any body tried drilling their won blade detent dimple to make it a manual flipper instead of assisted? I wonder if there is a reason why they didn't put it there in the first place.

I have a shallot don't use it much but when I was useing it the the knife got unlock almost took my finger out since then it sits in my safe.

You're saying the lock failed? That's surprising to hear!
What do you use now? Axis-lock?

bluejayburly, You might be able to put a dimple in the blade using an automatic center punch. Just don't use an expensive punch on S-110-V.
