Hey All,
I am a Traditional Guy by heart and always will be. The older original knives of use tell deep stories we will never know.... But on to the topic!
I would say a year ago or so, I made the switch in my mind to folders. Why? I don't know. Perhaps for something new? Boredom, Perhaps! Anyway, when I got started it was really interesting I loved them all as they were all fine blades, not that they are not today, but most have no interest by me, including the ones I have owned. It's a shame but I think I have handled a fair amount of knives just south of $5 Franklins. I have owned several at the same time. All of these would be considered as top notch manufacturers and no junk. I have not have any issues with any of them.
Today I own (7) modern folders. In which (3) will be sold here very soon. (2) of which are CRK and are permanent pieces that will move on to my grandson as time pieces in which these do require any explanation IMO. Two of these excluding CRK will be the only pieces kept. I am not discounting some of my runner ups but in the big picture we all have our own endorsements I Suppose.
Runner ups: Spyderco Southard, Spyderco Native 5, and Hinderer 3.5 XM 18.
Spyderco Southard IMO opinion is one of the highest value blades Money can buy, and in 204 XHP makes it a real winner. Well unless you have a really good happy night as I did and miss your intended mark if you know what I mean, Ouch!!!! A bit too large and heavy for the pocket.
Spyderco Native 5 in G10 Black scales, dang it a hard one to beat! Blade finishing is impeccable, and the fit and finish unsurpassed in most cases. Don't know why but it never found enough time into my rotation.
Hinderer XM18 Well then much too much blade than I could use personally. Although it may be the best or near the best in what it can do, I will never use it's potential.
The keepers! Both Benchmades, well then most of you already know that the 1st one might be the ole 940. Yup, it is. The 940 is IMO one of the ugliest blades I have ever set eyes on. For many years I wondered what was wrong with all of you guys who loved it. Well I understand today, thoroughly. This knife is ugly, and the best at the same time. It fashions coated alum scales with its internals being S30V blade that is sick!!!!! Period. This knife is one of few I have never needed to sharpen while using daily. It is completely stain resistant in my eyes as it has been put away wet in many occasions. It is super light, Thin, almost undetectable if that is a concern, best for the dollar of any knife of its size for usable cutting length, best action of any knife I have ever owned, and the most useful blade I have ever owned. Perhaps the easiest to fall in love with Ugliest Duckling.
The other keeper is the Benchmade 960 which is discontinued. It sports the same attributes as the 940 but is a safe queen by me.
