How many knives have you lost?

I just lost one of my favorite EDC's - a BM 550 Griptillian from the first production run, no/ 686.

It fell out of my back pocket when I was piggybacking my daughter in the park yesterday.

Losing it got me to thinking - in my 41 years, I have now lost 5 knives:

- this BM 550
- a Leatherman Wave that was confiscated by the TSA because I forgot to put it in my check in luggage at Dulles International
- a Gerber Mark II that was stolen from my truck 4 years ago - recovered by the cops, then lost in the snow the following winter
- a SAK tinker that unclipped from my lifejacket carabiner in 1985 while rafting
- a Puma hunter's pal that belonged to my father- he bought it in 1958, and I lost it playing in the woods when I was about 13.

DAMN - I miss every one of them.

A bayonet my dad gave me (lost in 'the Field')
A small SAK given me at work for 5 Year Anniversary (fell out of slacks pocket/ Never lost one from a jeans pocket)
Can't think of any others....
Where were you rafting? If it was the Guadalupe, I've got it and many others. :D

I was rafting on the Nahanni river up in the Yukon.

The glacier silt in that river probably did a great sandblasting job on my SAK.

Victorinox camper, Leartherman Micra, SOG Crosscut and a Spyderco Native.

They all still sting a little now that I think about it.

In 30 years I've lost 5 and found 4 of them.

So it's more like 4 were MIA and found, 1 was lost and so far never found.

Now misplace, I misplace 'em all the time, then I go crazy retracing my steps till I find it.

I once misplaced my BM 730 ARES after 2 days of frantic searching it turned up in the freezer, now when I misplace something that's the first place I look.

I've never lost anything that I was particularily upset over losing. The airport got a beat-up old V'nox Classic once, I lost a Kershaw linerlock that I'd already bought a replacement for, and I dropped my first SAK (a Wenger) in a cesspool (which I think was an overflowing septic tank) never to be seen again.

I've given away more knives than I've lost. Ironically, people seem to lose the knives I've given. One broke his, one had his confiscated, one had his stolen from his truck, and one I gave to a ladyfriend was horribly abused by her later boyfriend.

Lost? Maybe.. Stolen is more like it. Around the age of 14 I had a Delica, Buck Protege, and a Balisong come up "missing". I found out later a friend of mine stole the Buck Protege, so I kind of figured he also five fingered the rest, so I kicked the s**t out of him and got suspended from school for a week.. The only one I really want back is a Delica, I loved that knife. I'm not sure why I haven't bought another... 10 years later and I still would like to get another piece of him, I hate liars and thieves.

I never really lost a knife, I do sometimes misplaced them for a while, although I supose you could call the SOG Pentagon elite that I snapped the blade of and threw out "lost." Other than that busted SOG, the only knife I ever bought that I don't have anymore is a buck 110 I gave to my friend when his boker top lock was taken by security at a Metallica concert.

I haven't really lost many knives, or at least none that I really care about. Just about the only knife that I can't remember where it got to is one of my first knives, a KaBar lock back that sort of resembled a mini Buck 110.

I have also "lost" a Camillus EDC that I was using as a work knife. I go to put it in my pocket on my way to work one day and I can't find it. I look everywhere I might have put it and it doesn't turn up. A week or so later when I am doing my laundry I hear a loud clunking from the dryer. Guess what I found inside nice and clean? :D I ended up breaking the knife at some later date, but that is another story.

I lost a Buck 110 over the side in the South China Sea in 1979 while on USS White Plains.
I lost a CS Ultralock walking to class one day, that one I carried for 2 years. Then several years later, I lost another CS Ultralock that I bought to replace the first one. :(

I've lost about evey carrying knife I've ever had. Most Opinels, a Bucklite or two, a couple of Barlows when I was young.

That's how I became a 'collector' or 'accumulator', I became paranoid about losing knives, stopped carrying one everyday, and before I knew it had a dozen unused knives.

I still carry when backpacking or working outdoors, and I still lose each one sooner or later. But I've settled on Opinels, which are inexpensive, easily replaced, and still very functional.

Best Wishes,
-Bob

several years ago a leatherman wannabe fell in a canal while fishing when my cousin forgot to leave it behind the tree roots... that summer we must have lost about 3 or 4.

also lost my first knife i bought myself recently, a wannabe delica i bought at a fishing store.

Hi All-

Thieves at Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines posing as employees stole a serrated Spyderco Delica from me in 1997 when I forgot it in our cabin bathroom upon departure. I remembered while standing on the dock and they sent a cabin steward to look. They allegedly didn't find it...even though I told them exactly where to look and only five minutes had passed.

Besides the chinese or pakastani POSs that I've lost at fires or auto extrications (I've lost several which is why I carry a POS in my turnout pocket) I have lost four knives:

1. My first knife. A cub scout knife my father gave me. I do not remember the brand. I think I lost it within a month of getting it. I hate that I lost that one.

2. My first knife that I purchased myself. When I was about nine or ten. A Boker slipjoint with very worn down blades. I bought it from another kid on the school bus. I carried it everyday to school until I joined the Marine Corps. It disappeared when I was at boot camp. I left it at home and it wasn't around when I got back. I didn't really miss it as I bought a new knife when I got to Camp Lejeune. I don't really miss it now as it really was worn out.

3. A Ka-Bar USMC combat knife I bought at the PX when I was in the Marine Corps. My Gunnery Sergeant stole it. The drunken jerk. I have since replaced it but I do miss the original one. After all, it was the one I carried when I was a Marine.

4. A Buck stainless steel handled lockback with my full name engraved on it. I lost it in a laundromat. I realized it within about ten minutes of leaving but it was gone when I went to get it. Whoever took it should have had no problem finding me to return it as I was listed in the phone book and I am pretty well known in the small town I live in. After all, as I said, my full name was engraved on it. Maybe he thought it was a new Case-Buck. I still hope that it might show up. I lost it well over a decade ago.

I wish I could lose my crappo Jaguars, Frosts, Falcons and other assorted Chinese made junk. I can't remember the good ones I've lost, I know I lost a good EDC, can't remember it. One that I didn't technically lose, I sold it and want another one, was a Case Copperlock amber. I had it on commission up at my dealers farmers market booth, and now I want another one! Oh well, we all make choices.

I have had some pretty bad misfortune in terms of losing knives. Early in my marriage, I lost a limited production white micarta flat ground Jess Horn Spyderco when I was in South Africa at a hotel. My wife never has forgiven me for that. I keep telling her that I would never had lost the knife if I didn't like it enough to carry it. Recently I lost a really nice Dragonfly in Nigeria, but Dragonflies are pretty easy to replace. My worst situation was when an Mnandi fell out of my pocket and was destroyed when an eighteen wheeler ran over it.

Ouch! Now that one had to hurt.

Didn't lose it, I know exactly where it is. I was about 30 yards off the end of the dock during a late night, beverage enriched, co-ed swim. My BM 710 flew off the waistband of my shorts when I was swinging them over my head yelling, "IT'S NAKED TIME!". I love summertime :D
