How many projects do you have started?

When I first started making knives, I would work on one knife until it was finished. I didn't understand how Mr. McMinn, my knifemaking mentor, could work on so many different projects at once. Well, now I find myself doing the same.

My question is... How many active projects do you guys have going on at once right now? Not how many have you committed to do, but how many are you actually working on?

For me, it's:
2 balisongs
1 RR Spike Knife
3 Scale Release Autos
And 1 Slipjoint.

I'm still a one-at-a-time guy. Only when it comes to sheaths, it happens that I have to or three wating to be made.

i have a few set patterns but the rest is being worked on. and even if i have not touched it in six months it is not dead in the water. what to do on these comes when it does. 6 days or 6 months the beauty of this is to let it happen! to a certain degree.

At the moment i am working on... 5 or 6 knives.

When i am sick of grinding i move on to the next peace for some handle finishing or something else...

1 sword, 2 nordic style drop points, one hawk, 1 double blade hunting hatchet, 1 bowie.

I also go by the "I'll finish that one when the spirit moves me" technique. I have easily 15 "projects" as you call them. Some are prettier than others. Many knives are made from start to finish while the others sit and wait their turn!

1.Tactical wharncliffe for a forumite.
2.large sweeping skinner,gift for friend.
3.large Bowie daily use for me.:D
4.small skinner for a neighbor.
5.gigantic 22" rambo type knife for the heck of it.
6.large tactical for fun.
7.large Bowie hopefully for cutting competiton this fall.
8.short wide ugly persian style thing (possible ugly knife candidate)
9.possibly a small chefs knife for big $$$,got to make sure the possible customer wasn't just drunk and talking big.

I depend on the "muse" for most of my inspiration and usually only make what is driving me. Right now I have one bowie and one tanto in process and am about to begin a repair job on an old scupture (if that counts-it's what I was thinking about when I woke up this morning).

Lets see..
5-Gen Tacs
1-mini Dragon Slayer (10 inch blade)
2 Bowies
1-Price Dagger
1-Damascus Boot knife
1-10 inch double edged Ames reproduction
2-Damascus Bowies
2-sheaths almost done and 4 more that need to be done
3-hawks
1-friction folder
----------------
a couple bars of Damascus
-----------------
Dirty shop that needs cleaning
a couple of machines that need to be mounted
Some Ivory to stabilize so it can be used
Some re-aranging in the smithy
Insulate the ceiling of the shop
-----------------
Going to the dentist to get the rotten teeth pulled-16 left to go and then no more mouth pain (just dentures)
Watching the kids while trying to work (man I can't wait for school to start)then finding time to spend with Donna...And her Honey Do list(that never gets done like it should)

Man I guess I better get busy:eek:Anymore I don't know where to start when I get in the shop every morning..
I used to forge one and finish it before starting another one, leaving the sheths untill later, not anymore:confused:

Wow, looks like everyone has a full plate out there. Guess I do too when I list it off!

Stainless category: 2 ATS-34 kitchen knives, one ATS skinner, one ATS hunter, two ATS neck knives.

Carbon category: two twist damascus hunters, one Randle #3 copy in cable damascus, one 7" double edge dagger in 1080, one 52100 integral from 3/4" bar.

Steel making: recently forged one billet of motorcycle chain with L-6 laminated between, one billet of cable with nickle added with L-6 laminated between, one 400 layer O-1/15n20 ladder pattern billet....

Of course they all need sheaths. Out of all that, only four knives are actually for customers, but then they are the ones who pay for materials to make the rest of this stuff for fun! Lets not even get into what we have plans for and can't stop thinking about doing!

My shop looks sort of like Bob Loveless's shop; but only in the fact that there are many, many blades hanging from hooks in various stages of unfinishednes.

Not enought room on this forum to list all the projects i,m involved in, but i realize i have a problem and i,m working on it.

Lets see...

1 forged neck knife (priority!:D )
1 small fixed blade utility knife (could be a necker also)
1 one forged 5160 hunter
1 Scandinavan stick tang knife
1 forged 1084 tactical blade to be tested and broken
1 forged 5160 khukri
1 forged 1084 Wharncliff style utility
2 440C fillet knives
1 small kitchen knife
2 medium sized vegetable knives

I think I need to narrow my field a bit!

8 projects with various knives. One is a short sword (my first attempt) it was going suprisingly well until last night...ARGH ! (still ssalvagable though). Another is a Talonite blade aprox. 8" long but very broad reverse tanto style. The rest are various Kerambit....RDT

I have about 30 knives going in varying stages of completion, but my total output for an average year is only about 50 knives.

5 I'm detaling to finish and do sheaths for. 4 blanks cut out that are sitting next to the grinder being ignored. 13 Paul Bos has that should be back in a couple days and then there are the folders I want to start on any day now. Other projects nagging are:drill, stabilize and dye half dozen elk sticks and bones, make some more mosaic pins, clean the shop (ha!), tram up the mini-mill, make tooling plates for the mini-mill and now I'm trying to get a disk grinder up and running.

Gads, now I wish I hadn't answered all that.

Working on my second knife, at this time I am teaching myself the art of scrimshawing.I have also designed some new patterns for up and coming knives. My second knife may be a winner;)
