I know they were made for about 2 years and Buck stopped makin' 'em 'cause people would take 'em apart and when they couldn't put 'em back together they sent 'em back to Buck.

Does anyone have an idea how many were made in those 2 years?

Just a FYI on this model. I was looking in old BCCI newsletters, Vern Taylor was single-handly writing the newsletter at that time.
He said in issue # 4 1988. "The 186 is going to be hard to find from now on."

Other 186 talk may be in some of those newsletters around issue 4. If you are a BCCI member you can go to website and look under communications to access old newsletters.

Thanks for the quick reply, I guess I better dig out my box and paperwork for the knife, put 'em together and put it away.

I put a S30V blade in one of mine... What a Great knife... ITE ...

Was it a direct replacement, does it still have the bushing in it or is the pivot hole the same diameter and the pivot screw?

I just have some extra blades for some of my knives... It still has a bushing and everything is still the same... ITE

COOL pictures ITE. I have not seen one of those taken apart befor. Now I know what I am going to have to start looking for, hint hint. HL

When they first came out it was 6 months before I heard of 'em and than it took 2 weeks of callin' every B&M store on the East Coast, (no real Internet back then) before I found 1.

They were sellin' out as fast as I'd call the stores, finally I found 1 in a Hoffritz out in Jersey, someone had bought it and returned it the same day, (said they didn't wanna hafta keep tightenin' the screws) I think I drove over and plunked down 80 bucks for it, (that was a lot for a knife back then).

Here it is commin' up on 26 years I've had it and it was an EDC for half it's life, I wonder how many are left, didn't Buck start replacin' 'em with the riveted models as people returned 'em to the Service Dept?

I didn't know about 186s or 560s until about 3 years ago... An ex-Buck-employee showed me two of them (186s)... I really liked it the minute he show it to me and I really wanted to buy one of his and he wouldn't sell me one... Than he said I would never find one... Well that made me want one really bad... Well it didn't take me long to get my first one NIB for a $100.00... The one in the picture I got for less than a Dollar, in a collection I bought with my son and his wife... I love San Diego... ITE ... :)
