How To Stamp A Blade???

I have a stamp with my logo. I am a stock removal maker, but I will soon do more forging. I remember seeing and old book that showed Randall stamping the logo on his blade after the blade was heat treated and all. The process showed him quickly heating the focal spot on the blade and then stamping it.

I want to apply my stamp deeply before the heat treat on a stock removed blade. What I would like to know is how malleable (sp?) the steel is when it comes to the heat. Also, what color will it be, and would it be possible to reach this degree with a MAP gas torch rather than acetylene?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Greg, you don't have to spot anneal the blade if it hasn't been heat treated. Just line up your stamp and let go.

and someone recommended I put a piece of masking tape over the target; it works very well to help hold the stamp in place for the hammer.

Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion. I made up a jig to stamp my blades before they go to heat treat. It eliminated alot of the bounce back, etc.

I want to get the effect that Randall and other forged blades have of the very deep stamping.
