How to treat blade scratches??

Looking for as many opinions as possible. This is my Greco Scagel. The scratches are as it came as this was one of his earlier ones before he figured out how to clamp the blade in the vise while driving on the hilt.

I bought the knife to use, but it had such a purdy handle that I haven't used it. And his particular grinding method leaves a finish that makes a rainbow effect in the light.

So....whether a "safe queen" or a user, any suggestions on treatment of the scratches?

Cold blue? I did that on a CS carbon blade and had pretty good results (cept for the smell)

One guy suggests a vinegar soak.

Been thinking of just USING it and sayin "wotdahell" but haven't reached that exalted state of detachment yet.

Carve a turkey? Cut spuds? Use for throwing?

Just want to DIMINISH the effect of the nasty scratches.

You could always hand rub it with a Scotch-Brite pad. Won't have the original finish, but at least it'd be uniform.

That's the ticket - Scotchbrite pads.

If you still want to blue it afterwards I would recommend buying some Oxpho-Blue from Brownells, there's not a cold blue on the market that's more durable. You can actually use steel wool to apply it and to polish it out.

Be careful though, any blue is probably going to have an affect on NS or Brass bolsters.

I think with the brass you have to be really really careful, I don't remember why or where I heard it but maybe someone else can recall why?

sorry to drag the conversation away from the original question, just a quickie...

I was also wondering how to treat blade scratches on a black blade, like a benchmade bt model. Seems like a dumb question, not like you can repaint the blade, but is the layer on most bm bts able to resist scratches that would expose the layer below the black?

On black blades, there really isn't a good Do It Yourself way to refinish them. On cheap "beater" knives most people just use spray paint or similar.

For what it's worth, better black coatings like Benchmade's tend to hold up pretty well under daily use. You tend to get more of a "holster wear" type wear pattern on the coating.

I scratched the heck out of this

when I used my norton india stone to knock down the bevel shoulders.
Lots of sandpaper and elbow grease got (most) of them out. This isn't a 5 minute job, measure in hours...a little each night.

Bruce Evans has a tutorial on hand sanding blades here

IF you bought it to be a user, go for it. You'll have a lot more appreciation of a hand rubbed blade ;)

Or, you could get in touch with Mr. Greco and see if he wants to do the work, prolly for a small sum, but you don't know if you don't ask.
