YAH! GREAT SUCCESS!! Just made one of my knives shaving sharp. very happy.

Now, how do you sharpen serrations?

I got the diamond rods, but they dont fit on the sharpmaker.

are there any good vids out there? since i didnt get the dvd

thank you

1. Yes, they are only for reprofiling blades, since they are very coarse! They will also wear pretty fast, and they are expensive. So use them only with light strokes.

2. One side is for 40º other is for 30º, it is written in the side of the respective holes.

3. honestlly don't know.

4. it is pretty easy.

I'll email you.

Those things you have there are diamond sleeves... they fit over the regular stones. They did make actual diamond "stones" that looked like the regular stones.

I didn't see the rest of your concerns.. hopefully they're being answered.

I see! thanks FoxholeAtheist,

I was prepared to know some holes haha.

For serrations, use the 40 degree angle slots on the fine grit stone using corners only. You do serrations in the same manner as a plain edge blade--the corners should slide in and out of the teeth. For chisel ground serrations you use a 3-to-1 ratio (3 strokes on the bevel, 1 stroke on the flats to get rid off burr etc.). Chisel ground plain blades use the same method as well, except you can use the flats of the stones in addition.

Not sure if somebody answered you on the brass rods or not, but they're for personal safety and nothing more.

Thanks for clearifying that! I thought I was supposed to use the rods! :D

I can get knives to cut hair now. just sharpened my 2nd knife.

Since I dont have the vid, I am just doing it by going up and down from the left rod to the right. and then using the finer rod.

Am i doing it wrong? am I supposed to sharpen one side first? or alternate each time? how many times before switching?:)

thanks! never knew sharpening could be so fun!

When comparing the "one side at a time" to "alternating" methods, I think that either will work, but I use the "alternating" method, and so does Sal Glesser in the video. I think it's easiest to get an equal number of strokes per side that way, and I find it relaxing to alternate.

Congrats on getting the hair removal started! People at work can tell when I have been at it because I come to work with a very patchy-looking left arm. If you want to throw a little more money at it, get the Ultra-fine stones.

I just noticed, by the way, that you have the older version of the Sharpmaker. The newer one has the two sets of holes in the base at different angles. The one you've got just has the 40 degree (20 per side) set. Bear in mind that it will still get a knife sharp... but not with that special joy of the 30 degree side. :D
