Well I have had the 30 ton ram for about a year now. Next week I will be building the frame. It will be a C type frame built from 7 X 16 X 1/2 inch I beams from an old bridge.
The ram has a 12 inch stroke on a 2.5 inch piston . Does anyone have any sugjestions as far as pump, controls or electric motor size etc. Also any good sorces for this stuff.
Going to put the hammer and anvil into semi retirement.

My anvil has been gathering dust for a couple years now. My press has a 5" ram, 4way valve, 3hp 3600rpm motor, 13 gallons per minute pump rated at 3600 rpm. It has a 4 gallon reservoir w/oil filter. All parts came from Northern. The ram speed works out to 90" per minute (or 1.5" per second). That is pretty fast. I think the total pressure at the work is 72000 psi or 36 tons. The valve has an adjustable pop-off w/gauge in line from about 1500psi to 2500psi. I looked at log splitters but they are just on the small side for sqeezing steel. If you study log splitters and build your press one size bigger on every thing you will be in the ball park.

So, Robert and/or Bruce,

You gots anvils and tools to sell cheap?!?

Cheap, compaired to what!!!!
Gotta pay for the new hydalic parts some how!!!
I have 65 lbs of large 52100 bearing races and 45lbs of 5160 bar to turn into damascus and the anvil looks like it will outlast my arm so I will keep it. I have more brains than muscle but its close so the press is now a must.

No, not a chance, it may be dusty but it is a 125lb forged Hay Budden. Its a rare beauty. Bruce

Jus' checkin'!

Didn't really figure you'd wanna part with that stuff, but hey, nothing ventured...

Start hanging around the farmers co-op, chew tabacci and spit alot. Dont forget to cuss some. Before you know it conversations will get around to anvils. Thats how I got mine. Bruce

Yes I have great pictures of both but Im not smart enough to post them. I need a manager. Bruce

Ok all you press users where are you???
How does this sound? Barns 2 stage pump that gives 10.5 gpm under 900psi "no load" then kicks down to 2.9 gpm with a working pressure of 3000psi. Hooked by direct drive to a 3hp 3450rpm 220V motor. Controled by a single spool return to center valve.
Or should I up the pump to a 16/4gpm with a 5 hp direct drive motor?
I have been told that the two stage pump will give me good ram speed moving the ram to and from the work at high gpm but also give me fine control at the lower "sqeeze" pressures.
What do you guys have?? Does this sound like a good way to go?? Or should I go with a single gpm rated pump???

I have the 2 stage pump. It is good for touching down fast to the work then the 2nd stage takes over. Mine is a 13 gpm. w/3hp. That seems to be good enough. Some times I want more power for sqeezing because Im bouncing off the pop off valve alot when forging especially if the steel cools off. But if Im trying to get a nice pointed tip forged on I usually sqeeze down too long and smash the tip flat because the pump moves the ram too fast if you are not careful with the valve handle. This is where an easily adjustable popoff knob would be nice. I didnt think of one when building this press. Thats why I still have the anvil. For the fine work. You need to spend some time making the dies for various procedures and be sure they are quick and easy to switch from one to another. I have one set each for: welding, drawing, flattening short, flattening long pieces, ladder, rain-drop big, raindrop small, several squaring sizes and a couple that didnt work out. As for the valve; Mine is a "four way" The handle spring loads to center when you let go but the ram stays where you put it. You can control the ram this way. If you want to sqeeze a little just pull the handle a little, if you want to squeeze a lot pull the handle hard until you hear the pop-off valve bypass. Be sure to get a gauge so you can observe the pressure at times. Email me if I dont make sense. I really think 2 presses would be nice, a small one for fine work and a big grunt for the mammoth size billets. Bruce

Thanks guys its nice to know I'm on the right page. I think I will go with the 16/4 gpm pump as its on sale for less than the smaller pump. I know I'll have to spend about an extra $100. on the 5 hp motor but then it should be able to do just about everything I'll ever want. I have all this 52100 and 5160 thats begging to be forge welded and after spending a weekend last spring with Rick Dunkerley, well the hammer and anvil just doesn't cut it any more. I have also found a local machine shop that does EDM buildup and will sell me whatever powdered metal I want in small quantities at there cost. They buy it in 45 gal drums!!! look out mosaic damascus here I come.

Robert, You have the bug. "There aint no known cure" Be sure to build the frame heavy and reinforced in the right places. I have torn a couple welds and had to add bigger gussets. I suggest making the ram mounts so a bigger ram could be installed if yours is too light. I love the mosaic knives. Bruce

If your motor stalls on ys .. Just buy another one with dual shafts and couple the same two motors together. It will give you twice the hp and stop stalling!

The beam is 7/8" x 8"x 9" The stand is 4) 3/4" x 6"x18" plate steel welded on the beam and has adjustable height by using 1" dia. bolts with the nuts welded inside square tubing. It is easy to adjust to plum and uneven floors. The ram should have been shortened but never did. It has 8" of travel. Bruce
