Hydraulic Press

Right on George! Have you welded anything up with it yet?

I know a kid that is the son of a hyrdaulic machine shop owner, he's going to build my press. He is also setting up shop to build replica Indians. He's going to be going full swing here pretty soon. He's got the CNC equipment, powder coat booth...the whole shebang. They will look like the old ones, but without any slop...it'll be interesting to see how it works out!

Show us something you make with that sucker!!! :)

Nick

George, Arent you worried about your wife finding out that you have Bertha out in the shop? She is good lookin.

I've got a question and it is probably stupid, but could a person use a wood spliter for a press, if you take the spliting wedge off and put a flat steel block in its place and set an anvil under to press against, or is a log spliter to slow and how many foot pounds of pressure do you need for a press. I'm getting old and that spliting maul just kills my back, if one would work for a press and split my winters wood to, well, I might just have to have one. :D

Thanks
Bill

Jim Batson covers doing just that in the plans he made for a press. You can still split wood w/ it too. They are available on Don Fogg's site. I managed to borrow a set to read through before I made my press. My press is standard open on three sides design.

Nick, dont try to fool us, You are attracted to Bertha too.

Yes a log splitter can easily be modified to become a forging press but most are too light duty frame wise. They need some reinforcments to keep from bending things up. Mine looks like a vertical log splitter on steroids. 26 tons is adequet but more would be better. Use the 2 stage pump for best speed.
