I Broke My Native

I was opening some mail yesterday in my kitchen and I accidentally knocked my Native off of the counter. Let me just say that a 41 inch fall onto ceramic tile isn't very healthy for a knife tip. When I heard it hit the floor, I was hoping that it landed on the handle, wishful thinking... I guess I'll have to head to Wally World in the morning to buy another one. Anyway, here is the aftermath... :(

I know how you feel. If you drop a knife open, it always, always lands right on the damn tip. I've never dropped one on such a hard surface before, however, and have only experienced the tip rolling over a bit, which was easy for me to sharpen away. I can't help but wonder if the fect that the Native is S30V is what made it chip off rather than roll.

That will sharpen out very quickly if you want to. But you're right, now you've got a beater knife.

If you are going to use that as a beater, you might consider hitting the sander/grinder and making it a chisel tip.

I actually thought about doing that, and I still might. However, I think I'll give it to the wifey. If I'm lucky, she might get hooked on the knife obsession too!!!:D

I can attest to this. Have done it twice now with S30V blades:( . Don't give up on the knife though! In both cases, it just took a lot of resharpening to restore the tip. Might be a little ugly in the end, but no one said the Native was beautiful to start with.

If you can get access to a belt grinder (or a belt sander turned upside down) it wouldn't be too difficult to grind down the swedge so the tip is pointy again (it'd take a lot longer to sharpen it out from the edge, and wouldn't look as good).

shouldn't be too bad. I broke the tip on one of my other knives and i reprofiled it in a few minutes on a SiC benchstone. You can use diamond or whatever you want.

Grind the swedge to meet the edge.

Well I dropped my Becker BK10 once and it made a loud clang as it hit the ground on the tip and i was thinking 'oh my god' and nothing happened to it ...
Lucky it didn't hit my foot though...

Sorry, guys ..... a little off-topic here. But WHICH Native are they selling at Wally World? The one with the wire clip?

Nope, a flat clip.

On the following page you will see two pictures, one showing the S30V Native sold at Walmart. The only difference is that the Walmart Native is all plain edge.

As far as the blade, today I screwed mine up :grumpy: I was cutting wire off of a snake at work, I cut down the electrical tape until I got to the hook which the blade hit with a little force. This is something I have done 50,000 times with my CRKT M16-04 without a problem. But when I pulled my Native away I saw clear as day a big chip taken out of the blade. If it were a freak accident I would understand, but this blade chipping crap seems to be happening to a lot of people. Biggest waste of $40. I REALLY liked the Native, until this happened.

When I started this thread, I was not ranting about the knife and or blade quality. IMHO, I think that this is one of the best knives for the money. As a matter of fact, I picked up a new one today and the quality is as good if not better than my original Native. I was foolish enough to set an open knife down on a counter top and I knocked it off. I don't think that it would be fair to expect a knife tip not to break when it falls three and a half feet onto a ceramic tile floor. This thing landed straight on the tip. It really is kinda funny that I broke it this way. Believe me I wish this was a thread about how I broke my knife doing something cool or noble. :D Unfortunately, I had a brain fart and dropped it. :o I'm not directing this reply to anyone in particular, I just don't want this thread to be interpreted as a "my Native sucks" thread. This is a bad a$$ knife, I'm just bummed that I broke it in such a silly way.

I made my post because I think our problems stem from the same thing, brittle blade steal. I drop knives onto cement floors at work more often than I'd like to admit, sometimes from higher heights. I have never snapped a piece of the blade off, only bent it on occasion.

BTW, if you weren't directing your reply to anyone in particular, why did you quote my post? :D :D

I wasn't directing my reply at you. I quoted your post as an example of someone who has Q/C issues with the Native, which I don't. I feel that this thread is headed in that "my Native sucks" direction and this was not my intention when I started this thread. I broke my knife by being careless and I wanted the knife world to feel the pain of my tragic loss!:D By the way, you must carry some pretty stout knives if they don't break when they hit cement. ;)

Thats a small break. You lucked out really. You can make that pointed again with a small dimond sharpener. Just take it down from the spine (swedge) side little by little as you are watching the tube.

I dropped my s30v military on a tile floor from about 3 feet right on the tip. However, the edge just rolled a little and didn't break. Guess I lucked out.

The walmart native is hardly a waste of money. Find another knife with s30v for that price, with the quality of a spyderco, and the integrity of the company in regards to warranty, repair, etc.

And the chipping is a problem that comes with a steel that has a high HRC, and the edge retention that s30v has.

The fact that your blade chipped was not due to the native itself. The native is available in VG-10 as well, which has almost the same edge retention without being as brittle, and is easier to resharpen.

Why would I want to find another knife with blade steal that is known to chip??? I'd really like to know the answer to that.

Which is a problem for me, I don't want a chipped blade, a knife with that steal is a waste of money.

It's apparent that you are missing the point.
The knife that I bought is very chip happy, both by my own experience and dozens of other people that I read about on this very forum. It's like this because the Native that I purchased used a certain type of steal. And, having a knife that chips so easily is a very large waste of money. Do you understand now?
