I broke the metal over the hole of the starmate last week. bummer. wonder if anyone has a repair suggestion. i'm out of luck with customer service

Is it just cracked or is there a piece missing? It is hard to repair stainless since it forms a passive oxide surface layer. If it is just a crack you could see if someone like a welder or jeweler could silver solder it for you.

If a piece is missing I would neaten up the break with something like a grinder then fill the round hole and the gap with a carefully contoured piece of brass or copper epoxied into the hole. I'm assuming that more than half of the hole is still surrounded by metal and could be used to hold a plug. I would put a hole through the middle of the plug for one-handed opening.

Or, you could contact Spyderco (more specifically, ask Sal here on the forums) and see if they still have a blade to replace it, should you send your knife for repair. It won't be covered under warranty, so they'll charge you for whatever repairs they might be able to make, but it's probably worth a shot.

what kind of shape is the rest of the knife in
would it be worth reblading (read with new super steel) :foot: :D

If you don't mind my asking, how in the Hell did you break it? Those knives are some kind of tough!

OK, that I can well understand. Congratulations on making it. Sounds to me as if that StarMate should be given an honorable retirement.

Well if you still have the piece that broke out and know someone good with a tig welder....

StarMates came with CPM44oV steel blades. I do not know if these crucible particle steel blades require any special treatment when welding. Does anyone else know?

just a thought, but you might feel get some kind of a ring made and placed into the whole.

I would be very weary of welding. You may find you have seriously reduced the hardness and lost the heat treat and or warp it.

Waving it, or living with it seem like better options.

I too would like to know how you broke it. Just by dropping it?

I sense there may be a story in this ... Give it up man ... :) What happened?

If you decide to write about it, give us the details on how long the Starmate held up.

Best,
Razz

So I learned a lesson. If you have to pound on a Spyderco, do it with a piece of wood or hit the blade somewhere other than the hole.

I want to know more about the survival situation as well. Was it your choice or were you placed into a situation where you had to do it? I know a lot of guys are going out with minimal gear to test their woodsman skills. Was it that or something else?

If I went out with just a knife into the woods, I would be able to survive for about five minuits. LOL!
