I picked up a 1660DAM. The first thing I did was oil the blade. I just rubbed a little Rem Oil on the blade gently with my finger and some of the black finish was removed altering or damaging the pattern.

Like an idiot I guess? I dunno? I tried to wash the blade with soap and water because I thought that the black coming off the blade was just carbon residue. Well washing the thing really and completely ruined the blade pattern.

Kershaw being the great company they are are sending me out a new 1660DAM, however, I still do not have a clue what to expect from or how to care for this blade without damaging the patterning.

How do you take care of a Damascus steel blade?

Thanks Pals

I think you did the right thing contacting Kershaw. I am glad they helped you out.

I keep my DAM Leek slightly oiled with mineral oil, about once per month, and I have not had any rust or visble damage occur to the finish. Maybe your knife just had a latent defect that showed up? Let us know what happens with the new one...

Welcome to the Kershaw Forum!

Hi Steama,
Sorry to hear about that, but as usual, Kershaw looks out for their customers. I haven't had any problems with my Kershaw Damascus blades, but I also don't use them for much. They are essentially just for my own collecting enjoyment. That being said, I just use Tuf-Glide every so often to wipe down the blades and keep a thin layer of protection on them and I have yet to experience any problems.

Like Jeremy said, welcome, and please keep us updated on your damascus blade.

Cheers,
jon

It must have been a latent defect indeed.

I already purchased a second 1660DAM (one for each son). This knife has a solid pattern that was not disturbed when applying oil.

Yeah, I am not ever going to use these DAMs. Oil once a month with Tuf-Glide.

Kershaw sent my new blade out yesterday! Gotta love that company.

Thanks

Yeah, I am not ever going to use these DAMs.

Don't say that...:(

These are great knives and are meant to be used! Mine has held up well to regular use. It is still very sharp and the Damascus pattern has no scratches or rust. They'll get bored if you don't use at least one of them.

I agree. What's the point of having a well-built knife with great steel if it doesn't get to cut something?

I propose a universal rule that we don't get to giggle at the people with fake-edged fantasy dragon/Klingon knives unless we have proven our knives worthy. Let them drink the blood of the cardboard box!

Yeah, I am not ever going to use these DAMs. (they are not for me)

I am positive these are great blades and that my first one had to be a defect.

I would love to use them but these are for my 2 son's treasure chest. They will get many cool knives and things that I have been collecting when they are older.

I bought one for each son because I like the blade so much. I also think it will mean something to them that I took the time and care to keep these Damascus Leeks nice for 10+ years. LOL!

Great idea! But do yourself a favor and get a third to use! And Pick up a RAM while you're at it. That thing is great!
