do you think hell have good equipment to heat treat a blade? he has acelyne torches and laser cutters, hell probly leme use one
 
The torch will only HT carbon steels,if I were you I would start with 1095 or O1,they are cheap and not that hard to work,if you are starting out leave the stainless steel to pros that know how to do them(Heat treat)

Laser cutters !!!!! WOW ! that will save you a lot of time. I doubt he has a heat treat oven but the torch will do for carbon steels, just provide the proper quenching bath afterward (oil). I need a friend w/ laser cutting capability :D
