Ok all you sharpening gurus, I just got a new spyderco, and was reminded what a very sharp blade is like. A test I use will it shave arm hair? with slight pressure, this newy spidy will peel it right of.

Now recently I've been working on my sharpening skills, hopefully will get better when my new sharpmaker arrives. But my question is, what are some simple sharp tests that I can look to try and strive for, so I know when I have put a very good edge on a blade. I don't mean hair splitting, just what test do you use that tells you you've got the blade right.

There are tons. The armhair shaving. When you run out of hair, go to your legs. =P Next is paper cutting, make sure you can slice the whole thing through without rips. People like to push cut things, so thats another route. I personally do a bottle cut test. Another really easy to do one is where you roll a piece of paper into a tube. Have it freestand and take a swipe at it. If it is sharp, you'll cut through it. If its not sharp, it'll crush the paper tube.

Check on youtube for "krazichinaman" I uploaded three videos that I use personally as a "sharp" test.

There are more formal ways of doing it such as on string and on a scale etc.

There's another thread discussion on this subject in this forum under "shapness test", check it out. There's some good info there!

Ok could some one please describe the "newsprint push cut test" in a bit more detail. Does this mean the blade is expected to cut thru by simply pushing against the paper???

Yes it does. The only motion is the knife moving directly toward the paper. No slicing motion.
