I need a couple of "tough" relatively inexpensive throwing hawks for my Dork Brother. He is retired and I would like to amuse him when He comes to visit and send him home with a couple of toys to help keep his mind occupied. Sorry for my inexperence with the Hawk forum. Nothing relavent came up in the search.

Shawnee Throwing Tomahawk from H&B forge has worked well for me.

Steve, Coal creek forge has an excellent rep here, I just haven't any experience.

Cold steal Trail hawk, Rifle man, Norse and others are also good throwers. (check E bay for good pricing.) There Viet Nam hawk seems to be weak in the handle.

Fort turner has several to look at also. Again I haven't tried any but there are lots of post hear about them also.

I am searching for coal creek now. I sent Steve a PM and am watching his YouTube videos.
anyone have links to their favorite makers?

Steve hasn't got a website but he will answer your Email and is a great guy to deal with. He makes great hawks and is a man of his word.

Stuart Willis and Butchesforge both on this site make some dang nice hawks.. Stuart has a website I know and Butch sells on ebay a lot I believe..

Steve mentioned recently that he is busy with orders, so he might not be here as frequently. With that in mind, you should probably shoot him an email (ccfms@sbcglobal.net) rather than a PM. Steve is excellent to work with and he does fantastic work. He is also very prompt with communication and delivery (mine arrived within 1 week of ordering). He might be a little more expensive than the mass produced pieces from Cold Steel, but I think the marginal difference is well worth it.

The Cold Steel hawks are pretty good for the money and throw well. Good option for getting a few inexpencive hawks for throwing. I've had my Trail hawk for a year now and it's worked out well.

Got a Hawk from Steve at Coal Creek Forge last week and it's pretty sweet.

Keith R Johnson from Great River Forge does good work and is a forum Member here. Bought two of his Medium French hawks over the years (1 for me and 1 for a friend). They make good tools and throw well too.

Fort Turner is another good option. I hope to get some of his hawks this summer.

Steve is going to make four for me. Two to keep and two for my Brother. Let me ask you about the spike vs hammer (poll?) for a thrower. Which do you prefer and why?

If one focuses on 'tough' and 'inexpensive' and 'throwing hawks'...

The answer is a couple of Cold Steel Frontier Hawks. Just make sure you loosen the set screws on the head before throwing them.

Glock- Okay I see you have a preference in the shape of the head. But- why? I am getting mine from Steve. I want the heart that comes from a tool made by a man not "Cold Steel". I do see the advantage to the American Tomahawk prices, but for the difference the Coal Creek Forge Hawks made in the Heartland by a Gruff Bastid who lives to smith is just so much better than anything made by Cold steel.

But, please tell me why you prefer one shape over another. I realize that poll hawks are more useful as tools and spikes are weaponized. But other than that is their a preference for throwing? I am old, I am done with war. I hung up my uniform years ago. These hawks that I am buying are not going to be used to crush skulls, they will be thrown and one will be used as a chopper. They will educate my Son and entertain my Brother and I.

Does anyone ever throw their hawk so that the spike sticks?

Over the years I have thrown spike , poll , and hawks with neither. The one I throw the most has a spike, but thats just me....If I was going to get four from Steve I would get two of each. You'll be able to throw both and will have a variety.
Start out at approx 6 paces and adjust from there. And you dont have to throw them hard............Have fun and enjoy.....

Hi there, I'm Robin
I think you'll find that everyone has their own favourite shape and style of hawk. I have thrown 6 Steve hawks (the gruff old guy)) all about the same shape and they all stuck with real power and deep. Great hawks.
I have a couple of through the haft spike hawks that I forged up out of old wide chizels using the tang as the spike. I throw them both ways and the spike sticks well. If I were ordering a spike from Steve ( a trade would be good Steve ))))))) I'd order a straight spike with a narrow head. I like fairly light narrow heads but wider blades have more room to stick.
What ya neeeed is about 20 different hawks .

You're going to love your new hawks and Steve is a He** of a guy.

Best regards

Robin

I have thrown many types of hawks, and it seems like the Cold Steel Frontier Hawk has the best shape, balance, weight, handle length, etc. for throwing. I routinely stick the FH 9 out of 10, or 10 out of 10 throws. Other hawks don't throw as well, in my opinion. The factory length handle on the FH (19 inches) makes throwing a breeze. The only other hawk that throws as well is a generic to that shape. If you throw a lot, and in the woods, etc. you will beat up a hawk some. The CSFH takes it well.

If you have other uses for a hawk than just throwing, get others for those uses. Every hawk is good for something...

I may be the odd man out but I like a heaver hawk for throwing. Noted I don't compete against any one but my self an I have ok days, good days and better.

I like the weight 'cuzthe hit is hard, deep and for sure and it is what I started with. (Dads hatchet)

The only spike hawk I have thrown was a H&B Medieval. The spike stuck just as well as the bit, when I did my part, and allowed a new/ different/ other way to do things.

Steve I would get two of each. You'll be able to throw both and will have a variety.

Sounds like a good bit of advice to me, but don't let me help spend your money. I will say a spike looks cool and has uses other than punching helmets.

And... forget about a hammer poll or spike...
If you are after throwers, get the Frontier Hawks!!!

some buddy evidently doesn't know the joy of throwing a spike hawk, spike first...:D:thumbup:

the trailing mass of the bit really has some nice tracking effects, and your bit doesn't get creamed, as well.

you get a lot of control with spike sticks because they have such extreme psi, so you don't have to throw the hawk super-hard, which can affect accuracy. they also stick great on a lazy lob, vice a tumbling throw.

the Cold Steel Spike Hawks coming out oughtta be outstanding in that regard.

i am not a big hawk tosser, but i gotta love a good spike hawk now and again.

i can't wait to get my hands on some of those dang CS spikies to vectorize.
