I think I'm ruined

My Small Plain Sebenza is almost two weeks old. Every morning it takes it's place, clipped to the inside rear of my right front pocket. It matters not, that the perfect titanium scales now have a few scratches on them. The beauty of the Sebenza is not in physical appearence, but in the magnificent way this wonder of mechanics functions. (I can not stand "blade wiggle" or looseness of any type in a blade. No worries with my Sebenza on this score!)
As I posted when I first ordered this wonder, it is my "EDC". As a collector, I have too many knives to count. (Both users and collectables.) However, during the last two weeks of ownership, I have grown to appreciate my Sebenza above all the others in my little collection. Formally, I actually liked the CRK&T, Kershaw, Case, Microtechs, etc... that usually hung from my belt or rested in my pocket. I guess it's like going from a Chevy to a Porche, the difference in function is amazing.
I'm already making plans for my next Chris Reeve knife. As we travel out of the country a lot, I need a smaller knife so as not to draw the attention of the airport guards in foreign countries who, even though it has a blade under 3 inches, might decide that my Sebenza is "too risky" an item to be in my pocket on an international flight. Yes, Mr. Umfaan will soon be my "travel pocket knife". The large, razor sharp Opinel used for cutting cheese and sausage can be safely checked with the luggage and the Umfaan can ride in my pocket with my Victorinox "Execuitive" with the Photon Microlite on the keyring.
I have been spoiled, and I like it! And, I feel that I'm not alone in my satisfaction with my Sebenza.

Ruin is such a subjective word, but quite probably the right one in this circumstance!

The Umfaan is an exceptional nice small knife, emphasis on small so beware of that, as one friend told me it's not a White Knuckle type knife but very functional. I carry mine off and on as I decide in the morning before work, depends on the mood I guess. I have the one with the spear through the tall grass, 1999 I think was the year. Really like that one or the ZigZag so if you are lucky you'll find one of those up for grabs, I'd post in the Knives Wanted section and see what pops up.

Good luck, now you'll need to also plan on a wood inlay?

Here is a nice BIG image of my small wood inlay Sebenza, with Box Elderwood inlay.

Yahoo/Geocites is acting up, so if you'd like to see that image above, highlight and copy it into the address section and it will take you there then, it just doesn't seem to work as a hyperlink....

That's the problem with Sebenzas, they sort of ruin you for ither knives; at least in the EDC sense.

My preference for fixed blades as outdoor working knives was shot once I got my Sebbi. Now the next step up from my large Sebbi goes to a 16.5" khukuri...

The Sebenza ruined me too. After getting used to the quality and workmanship from CRK. Nothing less for me will do!

When I joined the forums here I was a die-hard auto fan. I've gone through many Italians, boker, Smith & Wesson (what was I thinking), Paragon, Microtech, Dalton, I've had one of most of the common mfgr's.

I always carried and used autos. Never liked manual folders except the Case & Old Timer's I'd used since I was a kid.

Then I got my first Sebenza. A small old-style. It was beat up, so I sent it back for a refurb. After a couple of weeks I sold it to get a large. After that I got a Shadow IV. Then an Umfaan. I've sold/traded all of my automatics now and my last aquisition was a 1994 Large Sebenza in ATS-34 with the stainless thumbstud. Now I'm thinking I might end getting another small Sebenza.

I'm ruined, and loving every minute of it...

I just KNEW that I was not alone in my "ruination".
smile.gif
Mike Payne did this to me. He knew my outrage regarding a blade that "wiggles". He subtly began mentioning things like, "Of course (insert brand here) it's not SEBENZA tight". It slowly began to work on my brain. I had to have a perfectly tight knife, thus the new Sebenza.
He's an evil man who'll begin to use mind-control tactics on you...slowly convincing your unsuspecting brain that you must have a Sebenza. MUST, I tell you!! I've already talked to him about an Umfaan. Save yourselves! It's FAR too late for me!

Its more than likly too late for me also then because I just ordered my first Sebenza last Friday. I put it on 2 day air, can't wait until it gets here.

John,
When your Sebenza gets to you tomorrow, open it slowly. Read the birth announcement. Then, start unwrapping the tissue SLOWLY. Savor each moment. after you open the tissue, look and feel the perfect titanium scales. Lastly, slowly open the blade until you hear that "bank vault door" click which means the blade has opened fully and locked. Examine the stone washed blade. Run your thunb down the extraordianry smooth SIDE of the blade. Then, shave a few hairs off your forearm. The feeling will be like nothing you have experienced before.
Post your impressions tomorrow after you do all this. You can make opening your new Sebenza a really unforgetable experience!

Trust me,
Will

Mike Payne

That insidious Mike Payne got me for a large sebby with that mind-altering technique too. But trying to hypnotize a knife knut with a sebenza is probably not a serious challenge
wink.gif

Love my sebbies - just check out the perfect finishing, that terrific edge, the attention to even the tiniest detail. Even the ribs on the blade spine are lovingly polished, rounded and smoothened. Then slice something with it and savor the perfect cutting moment... Its not better than sex but its close

Or mabye I've been sniffing too much of Tuff-Glide fumes again.

The wife says it would be a good bit cheaper if i had just gone and got a substance addiction instead. Bad joke but the truth is somewhere there...

Oh! The shame of it all!
smile.gif

He's such a tricky man! Or, maybe I'm just stupid. However, stupid with a brand new Sebenza!
smile.gif

Hey John! Did you get it? Don't let the cars run over your tounge as you stand out by the road looking for the Big Brown Truck!
smile.gif

Will

No, I didn'y get it today. I really hope I get it tomorrow. I am a left hander and when I called the woman I talked to said that they might not have a left handed one right now that they might have to make it and if they did have to make it that it would take about a week to get it. So I am still waiting.

Waiting is the hardest part, John. I'm not a "newbe" to the knife game, but I'll admit that I could barely contain myself while I waited for my Sebenza to get here. If it's possible to believe, Sebenzas are even nicer than most of us can describe in these posts. It's the way they work. SMOOOooooth.
smile.gif
And also, the blade really IS as tight as everyone says. Quite amazing when you think about it.

Will

Received my first Friday.
smile.gif
I've been playing with it since then, but it's late and I'm getting sleepy....so sleepy...Umfaan...Umfaan...

I called about my Sebenza last Friday and the woman I talked to said that it would be 3 to 4 weeks before I got it because they didn't have any left handed ones right now so they would have to make it.

John,
I simply don't know how you're going to endure the wait.
frown.gif
I recommend Glenlivet, taken in the proper dosage of course.
smile.gif
Post if you get the "waiting for my left-handed Sebenza shakes"!

I would reconsider taking an Umfaan out of the country.

I don't know where you're going, but there was a post by Nemo about a year ago, who had his Umfaan confiscated going from France to England.

Both countries (esp the UK) have strict laws about knives. In the UK, you can own one, but carry is unlawfull. Not sure what it is in France.

Monaco has no knife laws, but you can't bring it in. Probably has to do with flight regulations.

Japan has a 2.5" limit on blade size in the city.

OK, that's all I know about foreign knife laws, but inquiring before you go would be a good idea.

I've travelled with an Umfaan through Europe and also your standard Asian business destinations, and have yet to have a problem. Typically I've just put it into the tray with other pocket contents and nobody says anything.

Your mileage, of course, may vary...
