I too bought a Gunting

OK, I decided to entertain myself and ordered one of these. I got it a few days ago. It was a plain-edge, numberless, black-clipped one.

I want to say that so far it is above expectations.

But first, the shortcomings. The screws on the clip are really bad. I feel that they are a bit too soft, the heads mash easily and the threads don't fit well. I like the shape of the clip, because it helps give a very firm grip on the knife, esp when holding for "kinetic openings", or changing grips, but the clip is too flat at the tip--this makes it a pain everytime I clip the knife back into the pocket or WB. It would be nice if the clip came up a bit at the tip, like the normal spyderco clips. Anyway, a bit of bending solved this.

Then there is the concealability. Obviously, as it rides so high and has that ramp, it is going to be easy to see. So I guess, one has to like the knife characteristics so much that one is willing to suffer the obviousness. I still don't know how I'm going to carry it.

Now the praise. I really like the compression lock. It feels extremely tough and reliable. The grip shape of the handle also feels very secure. I feel that I could ram this little knife into a coconut and my hand would not slip on the handle.

I guess it is designed for stabbing and twisting out, right? I personally like this, because I believe that this is the fastest and most efficient way to get the knife into the target.

I also like the idea that it can be used closed as a hammer. I am most comfortable with boxing movements, and the knife can easily be used as a lead flick-out jab, held like a hammer, with the ramp impacting. Then my rear hand can come in, then instead of a hook from my lead hand, I can use the knife like a hammer in almost the same motion. Or it can go just like a normal punch.

Also the butt of the knife is the best striker I have ever seen in a folding knife. Stab in, rotate out, strike with the butt and swing-cut.

The kinetic opening idea seems very useful too. So far I have not tried opening it on my thigh, as I have noticed that the point tends to dig in when the surface you open it on is too wide....it is very easy to inertia open too, or you can use the ramp or hole with your thumb. It feels as if you can do a lot of things with this knife...it's kind of like a toy.

So I guess I'll be getting the trainer and tapes later.

If only it were more concealable, I would make it one of my EDCs immediately. If I wanted a small knife to defend my life with, I think this is it.

In short, it's a great knife.....but like a high-powered sports car, it has its "difficult" side.

Incidentally, I have just seen the L-shaped sheath by skunkworks in Howard Wallace's post.

Looks very convenient and discrete but maybe it might take away some of the accessing speed when the gunting is carried clipped IWB or in pocket.

Regarding your "So far I have not tried to open it on my thigh..."

Don't. Just don't.

Amen. Don't open it on your thigh or any other part of your body. It WILL cut you, and to the bone as some have discovered the hard way. If you want to practice kinetic openings. Do it on your palm. Hold your left palm UP and kinetic open with the knife in your right hand in a pinch grip striking downwards. This is the safest. If you open on the back of your left hand you will cut something.

Have fun, good luck.

JamesA and Crecy, thanks for your concern.

I will remember not to open it on my thigh.

It seems as if some accidents have already happened.

Never mind, we can always sue BRAM.

Mark down the most recent as about an hour ago. I'm an idiot. I knew better. I even had the trainer with me. My favorite jeans are now destined to become cutoffs.

"You need a bandaid? My wife's a nurse and I'm an EMT - you need that looked at?"

Bram, consider the legal paperwork forthcoming... ;)

Don't even open it on your palm. I did that and cut my pinkie. Now that I have the trainer I use it for "playing."

Thanks for all the support and knife in cheek comments..
Really..
Yeah..its a thoroughbred...its a knife like a Porsche Turbo..its right on the cutting edge...no pun intended..

Thomas, David and I used a live blade in full time demos for years..WHY?
We didn't have a DRONE.
When we got the first proto's there was only one of each to go around and we stil used a live blade..

Yeah.,.you're right we got a few nicks here or there.
But we survived alot of slam n jam demos with a live blade..
My core group? Those that are my personal private students..
They also got stuck using live blade only as we experimented and tried to see what a kinetic knife would really do!

What we larned overal is to use a DRONE, to practice with a Drone..

As for the clip not having a lip..well its got more surface area and without the lip one doesn't catch it on things and "SPROING" no clip..cause it got caught and bent out!

It sits fine in my pockets..no problem..but I love SKUNKWORKS holsters
which come in all shapes, sizes and locations..

As for opening it on your palm..thats how I practice..palm up pull down..
reverse grip?
palm DOWN pull up..
just the exact opposite..
of course it works much better with a DRONE..

Yes you're correct..you can drive it in and twist it out and it stays in your hand.."Filipino thrusting" ( and I mean that in a generic sense of the label...OK?) is mainstay and easy..

anyways..thanks for getting one and trying it..
Get a DRONE..get the tapes..you won't be sorry..REALLY..

If you can use an Olisi Pallid..if you can BOX..you got the idea of its impact worth..and it sounds like you do,,

bye!!

Brian_Turner, Thorin Hammer and BRAM, thanks for your replies.

I will try my best not to cut myself while playing with this toy.

BRAM, thanks for your lengthy response. I have never met you but I have always felt that people who are enthusiastic about what they teach make the best teachers. Detractors may say that you are just promoting your product but the amount of enthusiasm you have cannot be explained away so easily with mere monetary reasons.

I wanted to post in the Spyderco forum but could not access it. I will very probably be getting a drone and your videos later on. Right now we are having a most horrible economic downturn in South East Asia and no one, including me, wants to spend any money on anything.

Good luck with your knife. I know I have something reliable and innovative in my hands.
