I'm not quite sure what I really think about it yet, but it did give me something to think about. I had an aquaintance over and we were in my office. I have an oak display case in there with about 30 or so 110's (LE's, customs, etc.) inside it. He asked me about them and then said " That reminds me of my wife's Barbie collection. They are all the same, just dressed different".

Hmmmmm................................................:(

As long as you like them, don't let anyone make you think otherwise. I have had plenty of people, in a way, insult my collection. I have plenty of duplicates, but as he said dressed up differently. Do I care, no.

That pisses me off. What do they do with their spare time? Drink? Play video games all day? When someone has something to say about my hobbies I just lay into them. This is what I like and I will have these knives for a long time to come. They are also very useful tools that serve a purpose. While these people are sitting around watching tv and smoking weed, I am at the range sharpening my shooting skills. They shut up quick when you compare what you do with your spare time and money to what they do with theirs. Suddenly they realize that they are a waste of skin and they have done nothing to better their own lives.

+1......

My Grandmother has a wall of dolls, and some Disney Barbies. I could care less for any of them, but she likes them, so that's okay, it's her hobby.
But, at least you can do something with those knives, they aren't just for looking at.

Dave, Men are going to have hobbies and persue interests. Some of this is a vehicle toward using our brain and other talents we have. I'm glad I devote some time toward this if I didn't I'd be doing something else, perhaps of less value. In your case you have made such a positive impact on this Forum and among the Collectors that without you there would be a big hole left among us. Causing our enjoyment to be minimized. There are several 'jewles' here that contribute at this level. Making our camping time here much more enjoyable. This is bigger than Barbie's. Shrug it off and keep going. DM

Some of those Barbies are worth a hefty chunk of money.

I suppose it's the same with 110s.

:)

People collect what they like. People who don't understand......just don't understand.

Put it this way. I collected comic books, the market tanked. I collected diecast cars (Nascar), feebay killed the market. Knives are like guns, most will always have a value, some higher than others but still a value.

I wouldn't give the comment a second thought....some folks are collectors...some aren't. If it exists...someone collects it. I've seen bug collections, spoon collections, button collections....I was at a guys house a few months ago that had 50 motorcycles...that was a collection. I have a display of almost every factory 110 from 1964 to 1985.....I hear "they all look the same"....all the time....I just smile and say " to a collector, they're not"

Everybody's gonna spend money on something, and most of the time it can't be monitarily justified.
My favorite is offshore spearfishing, I always hear "its a lot cheaper to by fish" yes it is. But I had the pleasure of taking it myself, seeing the cool stuff you get to see under there, the tranquility, eating it fresh, hopefully it was a beautiful day on the water, and commoraderie with friends. Vs. Chase'n a little white ball, and having only commoraderie with friends, likely spending the same money and going home with nothing. This is not a knock on golfers, just don't knock what I enjoy.
I also enjoy hunting and guns and knives. Most of my hobbies I've got something to show for at the end of the day, vs many others. But hey to ea his own.

+1 i say something very similar to what you say

I work with a guy that used to collect dolls and doll clothing. He says that prior to his divorce his collection was valued at $300,000! He takes great interest in my Buck 110 collection, especially the way I value different variations. He was telling me an interesting story the other day about acquiring a large doll/doll clothing collection and the seller threw in his deceased wives costume jewelry....that turned out to be real! As stated above, I think collectors understand each other, but others don't.

Like others have said; there are collectors and then there's everyone else. My wife is a collector, just not of knives. She collects tea pots and costume jewelery. I guess it can be best summed up by something she said to me the other day about a new knife I got. She said she thought the material the scales were made of would make a nice piece of jewlery. So there you go.

Hello Dave--The last time You checked, you earned the money one way or the other, so you have the right to spend it your way.--Hey that would make a good song title---Have it your way--LOL. We do all enjoy looking at your new deals, we are glad someone has them that is willing to go to the trouble to put up on the ole computer for us to look at and drool over. It's good to have a collector on here like you. Thanks for befriending us all.
Harold

I have also seen people make such comments when they were actually envious of it.

As much as you like tak'n the pictures, we like seein'em.

Kinda like riding your Harley, Dave, if you have to explain they wouldn't understand. There is something special about picking up a well made knife.

I have been collecting knives for over 40 years, and I could easliy make money on my collection if I needed to sell any ( I have never sold one yet!). They have given me great joy in my spare time. I use them fishing and hunting and for everyday work. I have given some to friends both in and out of law enforcement and I have educated many of my LEO past fellow workers on the fact that most knives are not "bad" and have gotten some into collectiing also. I agree that our hobby is something you can get use of, since the knives are tools. Most other small collectable items are not so useful outside of their collector value. As stated before, I earn my money, I have a good job and no bills, so if I choose to spead money collecting a useful tool that I always buy at a good deal price, then so be it....

Here's some food for thought. As long as they feed your need, who cares what people say! Does it make you feel good when you walk by that display and look at your collection? If it does then pay no attention to what others say. We are "knife people"! Some are not and will never understand. All I can say is as long as they don't understand and are not buying knives then that leaves more for me! LOL!
