I will soon be buying a Strider folder

I have done a lot of research and will soon be buying a new Strider folder. However I am not sure which one to buy and which internet dealer I should buy it from. I am not looking to buy the Buck version. Any suggestions? Thank you.

If weight and thickness is not a concern, get the full size AR or GB. If you're looking for something lighter and thinner go for the SnG.

My suggestion regardless of which one you decide on. If you have noticed knife sales are pretty slow right now. Knives that used to be gone in an hour sit for sale on the forums here for days. I think you'll get your best price by keeping an eye on the for sale forum and getting one from a respected forum member.

I agree with Lifter. My GB is great, and is part of my EDC rotation. My SnG is a little smaller but I don't mind the heft of the GB - it's reassuring.

That's the issue, size, weight and thickness.

The weight I don't notice in my AR, but the grip is thick and the handle digs into my thigh when I sit for long periods. It is over 1/2" thick, and I bang counters sometimes. It's my "week-ender" in blue jeans.

My SnG is my daily EDC for many months. I don't even notice it, and sometimes check to see if it is still there. After it's third (very light) trip down the Edge Pro, it's spooky sharp.

Like any knife, it's your needs that matter. But any Strider is terrific.

I have the Buck Strider and the heft is reassuring--if you can't carry a gun or a fixed blade--these beasts really feel like the next best thing!

Hey Tourist or Ichabod Crane or whoever you are now this has got to be the funniest thing you have ever typed....

I quote "and I bang counters sometimes."

LOL I am sitting on the freakin floor laughing my stomach hurts that is so funny!

Seriously though check out getting a MARSOC Strider Folder they are going to be the hottest thing going soon.

Its basically a Super SnG folder from Strider slated to have a military version numbered and a brother civillian version numbered/

Price is steep $550 or so but your getting a hell of a great knife.

Check out the new MARSOC Striders they are on the Strider website www.striderknives.com

Tourist you should really consider getting the hell away from L.O. and stop banging counters find a girlfriend ;)

Bought my AR about 2 weeks ago and it's a wonderful knife. I thought it was going to be too big for EDC, but it actually carries very well. I've had it clipped to my pocket and it doesn't feel that heavy at all. It might not look very ergonomic, but it feels really good and fits my hand perfectly.

Like others have said, get any Strider and you'll be more than satisfied with it.

What is the difference between the AR and Buck Strider to justify hundreds more? I notice that the Buck is guaranteed for life, both are built like tanks so what else would you want? Thanks for any advice.

It has to do with the ergonomics, the materials, and the attention to detail. All are better on the the Striders.

mschwoeb took the words right out of my mouth.

Take the SBT and the SnG for example. What justifies the $250 price difference? Well... thick and strong titanium frame lock, G10 scale, S30V steel, thick blade stock... you can see where I'm going with this. I'm not trashing the SBT or Buck in any way; just stating why I think the difference in price is justifiable.

Also, I think the Strider guarantee is worth the price difference as well. I can beat the crap out of my Strider and not have to worry whether or not it will be covered under the warranty, because it will be. Again, I'm not trashing Buck, but I don't think they'd replace my broken knife if I was using it as a prybar.

I find no difference I mean ZERO difference in the Buck warranty or the Strider Warranty.

Having had both folders and having had both worked on by the two companies I found no difference in the Buck service and the Strider Service.

I sent a very used BU880 Tanto and 880 SP in to Buck for a rebuild/resharpen and what I got back was amazing all the torx screws had been replaced by new ones and they even replace all the bronze bearings (washers) on both knives plus a new pocket clip on the Tanto all for $6.95!!! return shipping for both knives! Returned to me in 7 days time. With a super sharp factory edge. I am telling you these knives where 3 years old and very abused!

The Strider guys had taken care of my GB in the past but I sold the GB off. I miss it and am replacing it with an AR SOON!!!I loved the knife but find that the Buck Striders are a better value and a better knife overall when looking at the big picture IMO

Buck customer service is great and I find it to be almost on the same level as Striders.

Spartan,

If you're banging counters, you need to get out more.:)

I probably should have written 'bang up against counters.' It's a real problem. I put a nifty scratch in my wife's washer a few months ago emptying my gym laundry.

Buck has a great warranty and they give great customer service. Though I havent talked to him in awhile I consider Joe Houser of Buck a friend.
Strider has great warranty service and I'm friends with Mick and Duane(when Duane doesnt want to kill me:D).

But why anytime someone posts they are buying a handmade knife, or semi-handmade in the case of Sebenza, do people feel obligated to post that a cheaper knife will do the same job? Did anybody ask? Some of us like to carry handemade or custom knives just for the pleasure of using a handmade item, even better if it was made by a friend. I've been carrying a Carson model 4 and a Jones Bros. knife, and sometimes my CQC6 for a couple of years now, before that carried a Terzuola ATCF for 3 years and not only have they done all I needed to do, I enjoyed it.
Before that I carried a Benchmade Emerson 975 for a few years, a Spyderco police model for a few years, and a Buck 110 for many years. None of those knives let me down either, so yes, production knives can do the job too.
But that wasnt the original posters question. He has decided he wants to carry a Strider and asked for advice on their different models. That's all he asked.

I'm quite sure that the real Strider folders are substantially larger and thicker than the Buck-Striders.

The Buck version is indeed a lesser knife. Smaller, not S30V, the lock on the Striders is much better executed and thicker too, I think Buck uses mere .080" thick liners :) vs the VERY stout approx .100 liners on the AR/GB. The Bucks also tend to have some play and again, the locks arent all that well fitted. Since you can often find a new AR/GB in the forums for around $350 or less, its not ridiculously more than the Bucks and worth it IMO.

But let's get serious for a minute, what you really need is one of these... :)

I don't mean to bash any product that Strider would lend their name to, but what it really comes down to is; do you want a copy or the real thing?

:)

Now, now, megalobyte...don't go showing him NM pics!!! Especially not the XXL NM SnG!!!

Pics of those blades shouldn't be shown without proper professional financial advising.

:D

Now that is just sick. Gets me every time.

If I could afford one I would get an AR. And what I mean by that is if I didn't have to spend so much on various other passions I would probably spend the money for an AR.
SNG is growing on me but why be half assed about it?

The Buck Strider 880 is quite a good knife in its own right and an excellent value for the price. Thank you Buck!

What you need and what you get and how you feel about it is a highly personal and subjective experience. I personally feel some mechanical executions are worth a great deal.
Its art, ain't it??

Buck's warranty (take directly off their website and shortened to take out the mailing address):

"Buck Knives warrants that it will repair, replace or adjust your knife if it is found to contain any defects in material or workmanship.

What is covered
Replacement parts and labor.

What is not covered
Transportation charges to Buck, loss, self repair, or damage caused by misuse, abuse or failure to perform normal maintenance."

Strider's warranty (also taken directly off of their website):

"All Strider Knives carry an unconditional, lifetime guarantee."

I'm not trying to start a flame here, but they are VERY different if you ask me. Buck replacing your screws and washers fall under the "replacement parts and labor" category. If they were outdated or worn out, they should've been replaced, which they were. No problems there.

However, notice that Buck does not cover damages caused by misuse or abuse. What I was trying to say is that Strider will have you covered not matter what you do; Buck will too, but to a much lesser extent. As I said before, if you pry with a knife and break it, then it shouldn't be covered because that's misuse (a knife is for cutting; crowbars are for prying).

That having been said, I stand by my original position: Buck won't cover abuse. If anybody wants to prove me wrong, by all means, please pry with a Buck knife and break it; send it in, and let me know what they have to say. If they replace it no questions asked, then let me know and I'll be more than happy to change my posts and my position as I would be clearly in the wrong.
