Which sharpening system would you go with.

Not to let the cat out of the bag just yet ;)

But I may need to sharpen 20 or more knives made of O-1 steel each day or two. 3" blade flat ground 1" wide. This system would be used to establish and sharpen the final edge bevel.

Any help appreciated,

Mark

Grizzly 2"x72" sander with buffer attachment plus a hard felt wheel and buffing compound of choice.

I don't have one, so I'd use my HF 1"x30" sander with a few belts and then my Dremel and a 2" diameter hard felt wheel and buffing compound to remove the burr and polish the edge.

you know what i would use mark, the cardboard wheels. you can sharpen a knife in a matter of minutes and get each knife razor sharp.

Thanks Richard , I do have the wheels. Just never took the time to master them. I guess I should add that I hope to be able to have something in place for repeatable results with different operators.

Mass production if you will..

p.s Richard send me your address . I lost all my old e-mails when I switched ISP.

Keep em coming

Same knife over and over? I think I'd get a new knife. :)
Take a look at the Tormek. I think if your looking for something that takes little training and is very repepteable that may be something. Note I've never used one myself.

while I like the wheel system for final sharpening , they just dont hold up well enuff for sharpening a knife from no edge at all to sharp. Have had zero lucky regritting the wheels either , so for now it will be take to a slight burr on the bader with a worn 220 or 400 and then to the wheels.

hey mark VS KMG if you can grind bevels you can grind an edge

set edge with 220 then clean up 400 mind you i do this on real slow speed then i step up to the 3M micron belts they are film backed so you can run them wet (i do)

i go up to 9 micron wet and strop
if you want a more toothy edge just dont take it up past the 400 strop with green compound on leather

my grinder is 1.5Hp and runs 1750 rpm at 60 on the VS readout i cut it back to 34 (HZ/% or however the readout puts it im not sure )

edit to add putting on an edge i do it edge down grinding i do edge up

What grinder would you recommend? Brand and rpm please, I'm looking for the same thing. Thanks!

I use a small 1 x 30 for the first bevel I use a 220, and go to 300-400 for the final grind. I then change to a leather belt with chromium oxide. I usually am doing 3-4 blades at one time and its pretty quick to get shaving sharp with good edge retention. My blades are O1 and A2. Here are a couple of links to knives sharpend this way.

I'd use my HF 1X30 belt sander because that's what I have.:o

But I agree with Thom, the 2X72 Grizzly would be an order of magnitude better. :p

Of course, if you can afford a $2,000 variable speed Bader....:D:D:D

I have a variable speed 2 x 72 grinder. That is what I use for everything I make. Just looking for something idiot proof :D

grind the blade to a slight burr, buff off with cotton wheel with a 400 grit compound and then with emery afterwards to polish off the edge.

the wheels are the best way to go mark ;). i have been at it too many years (since i was in jr high) and seen or used all kinds of gadgets to sharpen with. i even made up a few of my own. when you get ready to sharpen a knife just let me know and i'll call you up. i will talk you through using the wheels and have you splitting hairs in no time. you can also use a belt sander to work up a burr and use the cardboard wheel to remove it. thats how i do a convex edge. or you could send them to me:D
