Pretty soon, I'll be getting a new folder for EDC. I'll mainly be using it for chores:, opening mail and packages, the occasional nylon zip tie, cardboard, etc, etc. I'd use it for personal defense if I absolutely had to, and all other avenues were gone. Blade length can be up to 5" legally, but I prefer no bigger than 4', and I'll go 4.5" if I really, really like the knife. Here's my thoughts so far:

1.) Spyderco Military
2.) Camillus EDC with either Talonite or 154cm blade. Can anyone give me any reasons to choose one over the other?
3.) Masters of Defense James Watson Trident
4.) Masters of Defense Duane Dieter CQD Mark II Stealth(if you can carry it tip-down)

That about does it for the knives I like in my price range. I've thought about some Emersons, but I've already got a CQC-7, and all the other Emersons I like are for tip-up carry, which I don't like. Any additions, and any and all opinions are welcome and appreciated.

How about a price range? Some may be able to recommend even better options if you tell us how much you want to spend.

As to the choices you've posted, I'd go Camillus EDC in Talonite. This is a great knife, and now that prices on Talonite raw material have doubled it may soon no longer be offered on production folders.

PS: I haven't handled either of the MOD's, so I can't honestly say anything about them.

The SERE 2000 is a great knife in that price range, as well as the TOPS #303 Thunder Hawke...Either of these can be had for $135 or less.

I have the Trident from MOD, and it is a great knife..fit & finish are excellent, lockup is rock solid, and it takes and holds a great edge.

The CQD MK II can be carried tip down, and has a reversible clip..Overall, the CQD is an excellent knife, and I was very impressed with the quality. Unfortunately, I'm a lefty and I did not like the plunge lock, although it seemed very stable.

All these knives are in the same price range, around $200 or less.

Here is another opinion, EDC in d2 from AG Russel. If you need stainless get the Talonite. I would also wait for another week and see what comes out from the shows in Vegas, before getting anythingg.

Masters of Defense Duane Dieter

Awesome knife...

A Microtech LCC M/A is a really good knife. I carried mine as an EDC for a long time until I got my small Sebenza. I still carry it every now and then. Mine is very well put together amd it is a VERY sturdy liner lock.

Kershaw Boa....
Nice size, Great price...
IMHO.. 440V makes Talonite look silly,
and best of all "Speed Safe"... Oh yeah... baby...

Do you have any experience with Talonite? Talonite CANNOT rust, it holds it's edge longer than 440V, and it's a lot easier to sharpen. So, unless you don't care about edge retention, stain resistance, and ease of sharpening; Talonite makes 440V look silly.

I love this knife!!! Unfortunately, I think it's only available in tip-up carry, right? I prefer tip-down.

Byran, sound to me like you're wanting a EDC utility knife and all you've
listed or consided is single blade knives. Why??

Why limit your EDC to a SINGLE blade?? NO single blade knife can ever
be a really good EDC. Now i know it sounds old fashioned but look at a
large stockman or SAK to see a ton of versatility that you will never get with
just one blade. Carry a multi blade knife and your favorite single blade locking
knife and you'll cover 99.9% of all daily chore need.

Bryan,

I agree with you about tip up carry, I don't like it as well as tip down. I have the SERE 2000 and love everything about it except for the tip up carry. I also have an EDC 154CM, best knife for the money that I own. I have a Boa as well and really like it, but I'm not looking forward to sharpening it. Best of luck.
