Hi all,
I have been trying to sell a bunch of folders and stuff to finance a new grinder as my silly Grizzly burned out and is now kaput. I have a Multitool grinder but that only does so much. Productivity is low with these even though they are very handy. So I end up doing a lot of the work by hand which takes forever. Working 60 hour wees on top of that makes for very slow knifemaking. I have several people lined up waiting for knives and cannot finish them in a decent amount of time. So, I need a serious grinder. Since it's the Holiday season, noone is buying knives much unless they are ridiculously sheap. Everyone is selling to finance the kids gifts. You know the deal. Everyone wants to trade. So I figured let's see if anyone has one of the following for trade against a great bunch of custom folders and fixed blades. This is what I'm looking for either:
Variable speed Bader 3
KMG (Rob Frink) Grinder
Wilton variable speed square wheel grinder
Burr King model 1272 or similar model grinder.
id kill for one of the above but instead I thought I'd trade a boat load of quality tactical customs by makers like:
Darrel Ralph, Greg Lightfoot, Bud Nealy, Bob Dozier, John Kubasek, Pat Crawford, R.J. McDonald, Bob Terzuola, Allen Elishewitz, & more plus I have a few production knives left. I could also include cash for those who want a partial trade. Actually, that would be preferable as I would rather not lose my whole collection. I figure making is more imortant to me than collecting now so what the hell. Hey, I can always get them back somewhere else in the future..right ? Thanks for looking ad take care.....RDT

RDT,
Dont' give up on your Grizzly just yet (hate to see anybody trade off their collection), if you do a search for "Grizzly" you'll pull up some threads on modifying the machine for variable speed and some other good mods.
If your old motor still turns freely (or you can make it do so) you can put a pulley on it and drive it with another motor. A stepped cone pulley will cost you about $20 and I recently bought a 1 and 1/2 hp 1750 rpm motor from Harbor Freight for $90( see them on sale cheaper from time to time).
Anyway, just a thought to get you back up to speed.
Whatever you chose,good luck.
Happy holidays,Greg

Thanks for the encouragement Greg, but my Griz blew out. It just stopped running and sparks and smoke came out of it as well it made a serious sounding grinding noise from the inside. since then it just doesn't run. besides I always wanted say a Bader 3 and those KMG's look pretty sweet too and are getting rave reviews. I hate to lose so much of my collection too but I think I have to. Although, I have seen the Grizzly modifications and I am considering taking the thing apart and seeing what I can use to attach to say a variable speed motor, so that's definately a good idea. Hey ya can't have too many grinders really, right ? One for say profiling and doing the grinds and bevels the other for slack grinding and sanding. When one goes down (hopefully never) the other is there to back you up. Anyway, thanks again and take care.....RDT

RDT,

Get the Frink machine. For $840 you can get the barebones basic setup then add stuff as you go. Rob offers great service too. I would wait a couple of months until after the holidays then sell off a couple of those customs when people have their Christmas money and shopping done. I should have listened to people and just got the good machine to begin with.

I too used a grizzly for a few years. The motor also quite on mine so I just put a pulley on the end of the shaft and ran it with another motor. But two weeks ago when I was finishing a group of 14 knives that I had sold the upright arm actually fell off!:( So I welded it up and finished the knives. At the show I collected my money and purchased the frink grinder with a small wheel attachment and a variable speed motor. Everything should arrive at the end of the week. I will let you know how it runs. Maybe it will help you decide which model you want.

Thanks Peter and Craig, that's kinda what I figured on doing. I know evryone is seling now to make xmas a little better for the kids. I hear that. I guess nothing will sell until after New Years. I keep hearing great things about the Frink grinder and that's a nice price as well. Right now what I would need most are 1", 10" & 12" contact wheels. I love 1" finger cutaways for added purchase and he 10 and 12" heels will do the hollowgrinds. Anyway, wish me luck. Happy Holidays forumites.....RDT

Danbo,
You sure did! But the money did at least go towards a good cause, I bought the grinder and stayed away from the riverboats!:) :) :)

I received the grinder and motor yesterday. The grinder looks great this thing should be around if my grandchildren decide to start making knives and by the way my son is only three monthes old! This thing is built like a tank! The package that came by UPS weighed 150 pounds. I had to help the driver unload it and then he was curious so we unpacked it and examined it right off the truck. The motor and controller came from Surplus Center and they forgot to send the heatsink in the box. So I am now waiting on the heatsink for the controller. I have wired the controller up and run it just to test my wiring abilities. This variable speed set up is going to be so sweet after running the Grizzly I will keep everyone posted when I receive the heatsink and have had a chance to grind some knives on the unit.

Well I got the grinder up and running.:) I had trouble gettting the variable speed motor setup where it worked correctly. I could turn the ginder on and slow the motor down pretty easily. I thought maybe the wire I had to the machine might be too small so I ran a dedicated line to the machine and no change, tried a few other things and got disgusted. I walked away from the machine for a couple of days and went back out this morning after rereading the manual and adjusted the CL and IR settings (just like it said to do in the manual)and it made a world of difference. Imagine following the directions to make something work like it is suppossed to who would have thunk it? :)
Now after the changes to settings the motor does not dog down! I am able to crank the motor speed down so that the belt is barely moving. Higher grit belts are going to be so much sweeter.
As for the actual grinder, my first assumptions of the quality are correct, this grinder rocks. It tracks great and runs super smooth! Belt changes are a breeze. I also purchased the small wheel attachment but have not had a chance to use it yet. I can't picture anything wearing out from fatigue on this thing! I would highly reccommend this grinder to anyone considering a new machine.
I plan to do a whole lot of grinding this week to gete ussed to the new set up!
