Im a little new to RAT Cutlery CO. and i was wondering

thanks for the link the reason i asked was i was looking to buy a RAT and i came a cross a folder. i was pretty happy because i didn't think RAT made folders and i like folders just as much as fixed blades. Then i saw it wasn't RAT cutlery it was RAT ontario, and i also found out that RAT has stopped making the folder where it was made in asia. so im glad i did a little bit of research :D and it sucks to hear that ontario was trying to screw rat.

one more question though. will RAT be producing another folder?

There's been mention of possibly doing a folder but nothing is set in stone yet. But if it does move forward I've heard it might be with VG10 steel for the blade .

Whadda the mods think about putting up a sticky about RAT vs Rat Ontario? That has got to be a FAQ???

We've got this as a sticky: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=575606

Which states:

RAT only guarantees and offers customer service on knives built by RAT Cutlery Company and does not guarantee or offer any customer service for knives that are manufactured by any other company, regardless of the misuse of our trademarks.

You would not believe the restrictions on VG10 and the pure politics associated with acquiring this steel - it's almost like there's a VG10 mafia controlling this stuff :D. We thought we had a line on doing a blade here in VG10 but found out otherwise. I think it's safe to say that you will never see a RAT knife with VG10 steel. I love VG10 but it's way too controlled to make it easy for us to produce the blade in the United States.

Regarding VG-10, won't it be a bit too brittle for, say batoning?

Anyway,

VG-10 = Made in Japan (Seki?) Therefor all Fällknivens except the higher end stuff are manufactured in, guess what, Seki?! Erm same goes for Spydies, except the Tenascious (love the anecdote)
CPM steels (S30V, S60V, S90V) = Made in US of A
INFI... don't know how Mr Busse get those from the green men on Mars...

Speaking of chauvinism among knifenuts...

We wanted to do a folder out of it and a small fixed blade as well.

Bummer :(. Well I'm sure it will be a very well thought out design with whichever steel you decide to go with when the time comes.

Hate to join the party late, but... Have you guys thought of N690CO? I've had some very decent experience with this Cobalt enhanced steel, via the TOPS Italian made folders and the Extrema Ratio line. Failing that, have you seen what those guys at scrapyard did with 154CM? Very interesting... Heck, after beating up a KaBar NEXT, whatever it's called, in 440A, I'd say, oh wait, put the tomatoes down! Whatever happens though just move the folder train along, there are pockets with holes being burned in them, as we speak. :D

ATS-34 (154CM) is ok. We had considered using it but haven't made our minds up. Heck, we're in for 440C but is has a bad rep in the market for some reason. I do like the N690CO steel.

My Emerson Mini Com chips relatively easy, given it's used to chop wood (including a small part of my desk:D:D:D) Don't have experience with another 154cm blade though so I can't speak for 154cm in general. IIRC N690 is another mutated offspring within the 440C family. Correct me if I'm wrong.

:D how about a removalable pokcet clip coated in kind of a ferro rod like substance so you could use you pocket knife as a fire starter. :grumpy: of course that would probally be over complicated and a pain to make.

I like 440C and ATS-34 (154CM). Have an old Buck 105 made with 440C, it takes and holds a great edge!! My old Gerber folder has an ATS-34 blade and it too takes and holds a great edge.

If you can keep the price affordible to us working people, I really don't care what steel you make a folder out of.
