I'm trying to think of a reason to go with a Trail instead of a Spike

and I just can't seem to get one. The Spike has a wider blade, and I can pound tent stakes with the side of the head instead of the back. The spike would be useful for rolling wood around or digging in a fire, so there's that.

Why would you choose the Trail over the Spike?

I don't see myself pounding nails with a tomahawk, I would probably have a hammer handy for that.

Any thoughts?

Well, to hammer tent/tarp stakes.

I would not hammer with the side of any hawk, due to deforming the eye.

That being said, if you like the spike better, get it. If you find you'd rather have a narrower bit, you can always grind some off the spike hawk. The spike can also loosen up ground for digging, be used for hooking to drag logs, or aid climbing. If you still need to hammer stakes, cut yourself a baton and instead of beating your knife with it, use it to pound your stakes, and then make it firewood.

It's not so much what tool you use, and it is a matter of how you can think to use it.

Problem solved.

The trail hawk is lighter, and less chance of killing your self preparing to do the next chop :P I just got my trail in and love it.

I would go with the trail as well. Cpl Punishment brings up a good point about deforming the eye. I think the trail blade works fine for rolling logs. I have not seen much reason for a spike short of jabbing through someone.

Smaller, easier to pack, more utility, safer when chopping and carrying on your person. You have a choice of blunt force or penetration. It looks like more of a tool, and less like a weapon.

Spike if you are expecting zombies and sheer cool factor. Trail for everything else. I would get both since they are so cheap, anyway.

i have the spike version as it is neat looking and more of a conversation piece althought the other is handy....

I was going to write something but couldnt come up with anything better than the above.

Get the spike. If you need to pound tent stakes, carve a mallet and handle with it and use the spike to bore a hole into the mallet head. Drive the handle into the hole and pound your tent stakes. A spike hawk is just as useful as a poll.

Spikes are harder to carry- I like to tuck a hawk under my belt with a simple homemade kydex mask-safe and handy.
