imaginary bali version of the szabo rad

Hello all,

I was surfing around and came across szaboinc's rad folder and thought it was an interesting design with the tip of the blade poking out of the handles even when closed for infighting. And then I thought, one could make a balisong version of that very easily, by simply extending the tip of the tang a bit and putting maybe an inch or so of blade at the end of it.

With a sandwhich handle construction, like on the tachyon's, it would just get covered by the handles when you opened it, no problems. And if the blade was a 5" blade or so with long handles, one could choke down on the handles and flip it like normal. The safe side of the tang part of the knife would be the same as the safe side of the regular part of the knife I think, so there wouldn't be any confusion, the worst you'd generally get would a pinch instead of lopping off all your fingers.

Heh. Well, I'm not tactical fighter, so there's a good chance I don't know what I'm talking about, but at any rate, I thought that would make a neat balisong.

I'm pretty sure some of Fred Perrin's balis come with an inch or so of blade poking out of the bottom when closed. Probably intended to provide a less-lethal strike, and you could still do blunt striking with the tang end of the blade.

Hi,

This concept isn't all that new, as mentioned Perrin has used it before. This is also seen in many German folding bowies of the 1900's. It was a mean's of providing a smaller blade for utility work, while offering a large blade for self defense. The main problem with this type of system, is that it must always be carried in a sheath, and would probably break some state's laws:( .

Interesting, is there anywhere on the net to see any of Perrin's balisongs? I saw that crazy wavy one on the szabo site, but haven't been able to dig up much other'n that.

Thanks!

Hi,

Run a search in this forum, forum member Eric Blair posted some nice pic's here a while back. There are also Philippine made knives of this pattern, Bernard Levine, and Blade420 posted some pic's of these.

Hope this helps :D !!!

....for those Geosite posts Universible..., nice of you!

Thanks! I am embarrassed to say I could not find any other pic's on bladeforums using the search. But the geocity site was nice! Found the one with the little blade on the tang. And now, it seems, all I want is to get a Walter Erickson custom bali. :) sigh.

I was trying to find a small Perrin bali not too long ago. Tracked one down but then decided not to get it...money reasons and I can't carry it in california...so not too practical. Anyhow, if anyone is interested in a Perrin bali, check out the classifieds section here:

no financial interest or whatever...just passing it on.
