What are some gadgets (keychain, computer, etc.) that have REALLY impressed you, and why? Looking at and getting new 'toys' are always fun :D

I'll start: Off the top of my head, two things seem to stand out.

1. HDS ULTIMATE 42: What a flashlight! This can do almost everything and feels very tough. I bought it hoping that it would cure my addiction and I think it's doing a very good job. There aren't many flashlights I want after getting it.

2. SHOCK DOCTOR MOUTHGUARD: Very comfy, allows you to breathe and talk pretty well. Most importantly, it protects very well.

There's actually one more, Native III because of its awesome ergonomics. However, it doesn't count because it's a knife :D

So what gadgets have really impressed you?

Fisher Bullet Pen...Compact and writes when you need it to.

Zeiss Mini Quick...Small, lightweight, and crystal clear optics.

Inova X-1 Flashlight...Amazing throw for a single AA.

Tilley Hats...Extremely well made and comfortable.

Slip-n-Snip Scissors...Very well made and they actually cut. Folds up nicely for pocket carry.

This one is easy: my Sony PSP. Loaded with 1GB flash, I can watch Anime, read Manga, play video games and oh... surf the web (available in 4 days!). The lcd screen is simply beautiful. It's insufficient for my music needs, but then again, I've already got a 60GB iPod.

PWork:

That Zeiss Mini Quick looks awesome! I might have to pick one up myself.
And I agree with the Inova X1. For a single 5mm LED, it has amazing throw.

Skyline:

Just curious, what kind of runtime do you get for your PSP? The graphics on the PSP are very nice, I remember the day of Nintendo Gameboys...

I have been thinking about making a post on this for quite some time.

I have yet to find the "perfect" knife, but I do have two other gadgets that fit in the REALLY impressive category:

Heavy Duty Work Glove by Geier Glove
These things are tough! I used to go through work gloves every couple months until I bought these elkskin gloves. The pair I have now are 3 years old and going strong. (Thanks to BladeForums members 2Blades and K Williams for the recommendation back in 2002)

ARC AAA-P flashlight
To me this light, like its AAA-LE predeccesor is perfect. Put it on a keychain and you never know it is there and you always have it with you. You can clip it on your hat brim and use it hands free. Uses easy to find batteries and runs an amazingly long time on them. (Manifest - congrats on the HDS - nice light.)

SAK provides a good answer with his name alone. The SAK is still one of the coolest gadgets ever invented, definitely "gadgets and gear" even if it's also a knife!

Q-III flash light.. with Rechargable 123 4.2v battery. Brightest light I have seen this size!

My Sky Timer auto/date watch.. very cool and still looks brand new.. this is the first auto saphire crystal watch I have owned .. will never buy anything less again.. My old watches would get scratched all to hell after a few days and this one is still flawless and best of all no batteries to mess with..

I kind of like the new Blackhawk Night Ops Gladius I just got. WOW! I really like the dimming feature (wish it started out low instead of high) and especially the strobe feature. That might be just because I'm a LEO and it's a great duty light.

A little large, but for it being the first model out, that'll change over time.

I'll second the Nuwai Q-III with the 3 watt luxeon led. Made out of aircraft grade aluminum. Bought 3 from amondotech for $29 apiece. Best, brightest, and most reliable (based on reviews) flashlight for the price. Look for their specials - sometimes you can buy several even cheaper than that! I use the 123 lithium that comes with it because the battery can cope with the varying temperatures of a car's glove box and even if you never use the light very often the battery has a usable lifespan of almost 10 years! The bulb, being an led, will never burn out.

I don't have this brand of gloves, but I do have a pair of elkskin mittens that are great. What I especially like is that this type of leather is very tough, but also stays soft and completely flexible, way down below 0 degrees.

It depends what I do. Usually, I see around 5-6 hours. On the rare occasions I've managed to finish off the battery, I'm pretty much finished - glazed eyes and all. LOL. I charge it almost every night, so it's fine for my needs.

#1 Filson Tin Cloth jacket.

Some others that come to mind:
- Duluth Trading Contractor's Briefcase, Portfolio, and Field Bag
- Minolta X700 camera, 35mm, SLR
- Texas Instruments graphing calculators, ti83+, ti92+, ti84+, etc.
- Dell Axim X30 PDA
- Kyocera Soho cell phone

All fit the definition of "cool stuff", are good quality, and useful (except the PDA).

You can set it to start on low and go to high. I don't have one, but a friend does, so I get strobed all the time (in the dark it's very disorienting). Read through the manual... my friend wished it did the same thing too, and then he figured out how and was filled with glee.

Gadgets that I'm impressed with...

I'm still impressed by my old Leatherman... it may not be as cool as the Wave, and I wish it had a saw, but that thing has been through hell and back and still does everything I need it to. I'm also rather impressed by my Micra, but rarely carry it.

Just about any Victorinox SAK impresses me... I've amassed a collection of them just because I see a feature on one that's cool and I buy it.

One of my latest toys is a Magellan Meridian Gold GPS. It's not top of the line, but it's a great little unit (retails for around $250, but my father is a search and rescue team leader and gets discounts on that kid of stuff... he gave me the Magellan when he got a spiffy, new color screen Garman). I've been having a lot of fun wandering around the woods setting way points and then coming home and tracking where I've been on MapTech. I've been wanting a GPS since they became publically available about 10 years ago.

I'm sure there are more...

Heh, if you update to the new update from 1.5 you lose the ability to run homebrews. I love running doom2 on my PSP :D

Palm Pilot, or simply, Palm. Its ability to synch with a computer, bring up data, and store boatloads of info, from names and addresses to appointments is fantastic.

Once upon a time I used paper format day planners to keep track of names, and schedules. The dilemma was: the smaller, and therefore, more portable the binder was, the less space you had to record entries. The larger 8.5"x11" binders accommodated a lot of entries, but then it became a ball and chain to drag around.

Everything prior to the release of the Palm was close. The designers of the Palm Pilot got it right. Here is a device that can record as much information as one would write in a full sized paper binder, and then tuck into a pocket when not in use.

I've got an older Palm Pilot, one of the first I think... I've had it for years. I still use it and love it to this day. Though I don't carry it as much anymore, because what I would put in it, my LG VX-4500 phone can handle too, but it's still a constant companion, especially on trips.

I'd love to get a new Palm system... but right now I've got my eye on new brakes for my '97 T-bird and a RAT-3.

Traser Glow Rings  - http://www.glowrings.com/

I have one attached to my Arc AAA LE when camping, so I can find it in the dark. Once the Arc AAA is fired on, I can find all my other gear... :D

Palm needs a better writing recognition. (Then again, I use OS 4.0)
My Surefire TW4 rocks! (E1 body with a KL4 backed with a Li Ion)
