Say you grab some snacks, a drink, and a paper and head to the local park to read in peace one evening. But then you get caught up checking out the sunset...

Now the lighting is getting a little dim. Depending on the snacks and drink it may be no big deal.

Roasted brazil nuts make a decent improvised candle that will burn for about ten minutes.

Even if you are carrying a ferro rod and not a lighter there are still ways to deal with it.

and the Brazil nuts aren't the only ones in a bag of mixed nuts that will burn.

Any guesses what's being protected here?

I like checking out the architecture of several of the old churches here, they remind me of castles.

The modern castles in this town are a lot bigger.

Thanks Mike, not the best smell in the world, but puts out some good light for a few minutes as well as warm up a small space a little or thaw out your hands.

Mist, I always enjoy your posts...the way you view your surroundings (whether it's what's in your pocket or the landscape around you) is unique and something I always enjoy and learn from. Keep it up!

Awesome MacGyver moves. Shoulda just burned that commie newspaper to stay warm or given it to a bum to use as a blanket.

Absolutely genius idea. I definitely have to give that a shot one of these days.

Thanks. Well ya kow, there is more than one way to learn.

Oh, and what's being protected?

Glad you liked the post. It's lots of high-end meats and seafood :)

Great stuff!

I never would've thought about that. Very cool!

Very neat!

Thanks guys, glad you liked the thread.

Good post as always. We used to burn nuts in chem class back in the 70's. Like that Nano-striker Ti. I picked up a pair after I saw yours in a prior post. As much as I like Ti, I got two regulars for about the same price. One for the keyring and one for the BOB.

I've burned nuts as candles before academically, but never tried using them practically out in the field. How did you carry the lantern, out of curiosity? Great post as always, Mist!
