Got my Impulse today. Great knife. It may replace my Axis as my daily carry...

Also got the Ontario Combat Survival Kukri from Brigade Quartermasters....
First I will comment on the presentation. The knife came in a plastic bag (as opposed to a box) stored in the sheath (as opposed to a cardboard blade cover). The sheath is a cordura sheath manufactured by Cold Steel for the LTC (or is a VERY good facsimile thereof... I would swear it is the one made by CS... I have 2 of them... 3 now..) The knife does not even fit the sheath very well. It actually fits the sheath made for the CS Ghurka much, much better... in fact I'm thinking of getting a CS Ghurka kydex sheath for the Ontario. Being disappointed and about to call Brigade Quartermasters and go on a rant, I decided to call Ontario first. They verified that the knives were NOT shipped in boxes and that they DO NOT manufacture sheaths for these particular knives (though they would not disclose where the sheaths came from...). This makes me wonder if they sell them directly to BQ and then BQ buys the sheaths to ship or if Ontario buys the sheaths from CS and then ships to BQ....?!?!? Also note that the listing for the item on the BQ page has the sheath listed as "leather and cordura" so as to imply that the sheath is like the other sheaths manufactured by Ontario for their Spec-Plus knives. This is not the case in reality.
Second, the knife. This Kukri (I guess it's not really a Khukuri, since it has no cho...) is the fully flat ground version. I did a LOT of clearing with it last Saturday and was very pleased with the performance. I was also impressed at how fast and easy it was to touch up the edge with my Lansky.
Please note- This thread does not belong in the good, bad, ugly forum so please do not move it. The purpose of this thread was not to trash BQ (even though I am disappointed at how little attention was given to packaging of the knife). I am actually quite pleased with the knife.

Finally- Just saw on Ebay (yeah, sorry...) a knife called the Bushmaster manufactured by Benchmade. Anyone ever heard of this and does anyone have any specs or info?

The Cold Steel ATC should be here by this weekend. I'll post a review.....

Thanks-
Orion

The Combat Survival Kukri is an exclusive from Brigade Quartermasters made by Ontario. It is 1095 steel and a damn good buy.

What is the inside info?

OK time to spill the beans and remember you heard it here first.

Ontario used to make the CV knives for Cold Steel. Since Ontario no longer makes CS knives they can now make the designs they used to make for CS. The introduction of the Tantos is an indicator of this.

Cold Steel does not make knives at all. They are all made to their specs by other companies. This is not to say they are inferior in any way. Camillus is who currently makes the line of CV knives and this secret has leaked before so I have no problem leaking it again.

The sheaths are made by what I still beleive is the same people who make for both companies.

Just for the record CV is no longer a modified 1095. Cold Steel actually has their steel made in a different manner and they have to buy 60,000 lbs at a time to do it. This is why you see a shortage of CV from time to time. This info is direct from CS.

Also if you have a Cold Steel CV with a smooth black finish this is most likely a Ontario make. If it is a rough finish it is most likely Camillus.

Well Mike,
Right now you could bowl me over with a feather.
This is a real honest to God revelation for me. This is why I love Blade Forums!
Learn something new EVERY day!

If it's stupid but works, then it isn't stupid.

I have a BM Bushmaster in front of me......had it around 8-10 years if I remember right.
Kukri style blade (everyone was doing them then).Pebbled Kraton-like material handle with bird's head pommell.
According to Mark McWillis, the blade is probably 440C.
Blade is about 9inches long and about 3/16inch thick.
Sheath is ABS plastic and could be (superficially) mistaken for Kydex.

Works OK as a light chopper/ campknife although the balance is a bit far forward for extended slicing and kitchen duties.
But I have always liked it.

Hope that helps.

MAN!!! I almost don't know how to type this without somehow stuttering! So does Cold Steel have ANYTHING to do with ANY of their products (design, etc.)? Wow. Never wudda guessed it.

Howie

Cold Steel and Lynn Thompson are actively involved in every aspect of their knives from design to production. They do not however make anything. They more or less are a marketing company and a damn good one to boot. Don't read anything into this. There is no really huge secret here unless you were under the assumption that they actually made their own knives. For the record I don't make any knives either but I too am classified as a manufacturer.

Want another unkown fact?

Camillus is the largest makers of knives in the world! many of the knives you now carry are either made entirely by them or at least some part was made by them.

I will not devuldge any secrets beyond that but I just wanted you guys to understand that although they are not on the forfront of your minds Camillus should get a lot more respect in the industry then they do.

So if you are impressed in the slighest hop into the Camillus forum and tell them that you appreciate their accomplishments in our industry!

It wasn't that it was Camillus that surprised me. I had simply assumed that CS did, in fact, make their own products.

Truth is, my Camillus US Army knife is probably my favorite knife. Not big, flashy, intimidating, fast, or even razor sharp. It's been with me for a while though, and has served as a real worker.

So what exactly makes one a "manufacturer"?
