In Appreciation of BLADE SHOW 2004

I just returned home after attending my FIRST Blade Show ever (after 5 years of collecting custom knives).

To say that I was absolutely overwhelmed would be an understatement. By the knives, by the people, by...well, by everything! In my life, and in my career, I have had some seriously thrilling personal encounters and experiences (some that most people can only dream about) and I will state unequivocally that the past weekend at BLADE SHOW 2004 ranks right up there at the top.

And the most enjoyable part of this weekend wasn't the knives. (I knew that I would see enough custom blades to make my head spin.)

It was the people.

For making this one of the most memorable events of the year, my gratitude goes to:

Gaetan Beauchamp, Bailey Bradshaw, Mary Bray, Robert Capdepon, Kit Carson, Murray Carter, Frank Centofante, Wade Colter, Don Cowles, Pat Crawford, Christop Deringer, Carlton Evans, John Fraps, John Hafner, Koji Hara, Wally Hayes, Terrill Hoffman, Anders Hogstrom, Ryuichi Kawamura, Jot Singh Khalsa, Joe Kious, Greg Lightfoot, Hugh Lowe, Hiroaki Ohta, Warren Osborne, Zaza Revishvili, Lori Ristinen, Bill Ruple, Corrie Schoeman, Ken Steigerwalt, Nobuyuki Uekama

(many of you may not even remember talking to me, but I sure remember you!)

A special "Thank you!" to the following for their kindness, their extraordinary talents, and their genuine interest in making me feel like a bona fide knife collector:

D'Alton Holder, GenO Denning, Dexter Ewing, Vampire Gerbil, Jeff Hall, Julie Hyman, Charles Kain, Gus Kalanzis, Kirby Lambert, Simon Lytton, Peter Marzitelli, J., Tess, and Danny Neilson, PhilL, Darrel Ralph, Chris and Ann Reeve, Brian Tighe, P.J. Tomes, Kathleen Tomey, Bud Weston,
Ryan Wilson

And finally - the following are hereby appointed Honorary Members of The Loyal Order of The Cockroach for friendship above and beyond the call of duty:

See you next year!

Holger,
Meeting you and spending a little time with you was my pleasure.
(Keep on pushing those folks up there one day it will sink in ;)).

Gus, the pleasure was all mine! Next show, we'll spend some time discussing how various show organizers interpret their mandate - and obligations - and the subsequent results. ;)

Somehow. . . in all those people you met, you missed the best bladesmith. . . certainly the best hand at forge weldin of our time. . . CLESTON SINYARD.

Over on Pistolsmith.com I wrote a little bit of what I know about Cleston. Care to look. . . it's on Wild Bill Caldwell. . . View from the Hills.

Thanks,
Wild Bill

Thanks, Bill - I just went over there to read your piece. Excellent.

And I don't really feel bad about "missing" anyone at Blade-2004 - heck, that's what Blade-2005 is for! You'll have to forgive me, 'cause I'm still a newbie. THIS should give you chuckle: I shared a shuttle from the airport to the Waverly with an interesting man from Montana. I had no idea who he was. Said hello to him again later that day and looked at his name tag: Wade Colter.

:o

I want to learn. That's what I'm here for. :)

HI Holger! If you must know the pleasure was all mine (and my family's). It was great to finally meet you and get to talk for a bit. Being that it was my first show also, I understand completely what you mean about not being able to see everyone and everything, but I had a great time talking to everyone I could. Thanks for stopping by our table and taking some time to chat. I hope we can do it again soon.

I have been going to the show since 95 and still meet new people and makers every year. What a great group of makers.I will give you a heads up on a cpl of makers to watch.David Dempsey,Doc Wacholz, and Tom Lewis.I could go on and on but I have a knife shop to build
