long knives are for duffers!
hello all! in this months blade mag they have a good stories on big knives. ive never seen such large bowies how can they be useful in the real world?

i think alot of it is phallocentric-hyperidentification. you know "i got a REALLY big knife in my pocket!"

im an experienced woodswoman. my old man and i practice the "old ways" of woodcraft. hes a very good teacher. we are both enthusiastic motorcycle campers and we do a lot of "geland and strasse" work.

i can do everything w my big knife u do w a little one
but u can not do everything w your little knife that i can w a BIG ONE
AND I GOT A BIGUN:)

I love big knives, actually I love all sized knives. My favorite big knives are Bowies. The only big knife that I own is a camp knife because I get good use out of it. A Bowie would be a collectors knife for me and at this point the only knives I buy are knives that I am going to usse. Maybe in the future I will get some knives just to fondle and look at. I sure hope I will be able to afford to do just that.

Big knives rule!!! They are fun to make, and it's great to see the look on most peoples faces when you whip it out

Heck..:) ..I think everyone likes the big guys really. It's easy to pick 'em apart for particular uses.., but there is something about a large wellmade knife that is just very cool.

I think it's also noteworthy that on a larger knife.., all the good features are more visible because of the scope of the work.., and esthetically more impressive. Of course an ugly big guy.., is super-ugly for the same reason.., but I do think they catch the eye of all of us even though we may not all buy them or think of them as practical.

It also depends on what you are doing.

If the poster uses a knife to whittle by the fire and spread peanut butter on bread while motorcycle camping, then a small knife is fine. But, suppose you were a soldier in the Gulf War and you needed a knife for getting up close and personal with Iraqi troops, what would you get? Well, one soldier ordered a Battle Bowie from some Larry Harley guy. And it worked well, from what I read. I wouldn't want to face any soldier with only a 3" minimalist fixed blade strapped to my side!!!

others go camping in areas where they have to collect wood for the fire. Sire a 4" blade can be beaten through a small piece of wood to split it. A 9.5" bowie will make it easier to do the job, and it will be faster. And you can do many jobs that the little duffer can't do, as Larry mentioned.

Minimalist thinking also limits what one can do. Well, some versions of it. I mean, lots of us could use a 16" blade for camping, but restrict ourselves to a minimally sized 9.5" bowie. :) Minimalism doesn's mean "go without lots of gear", It means to use the least amount of gear for what your task is. For some versions of camping, a 9.5" bowie is very minimal.

besides, big blades are gorgeous. They are liek fine women with their lines and curves and such. Small blades are useful, but not elegant.

"phallocentric-hyperidentification?"

Well, It's Kolkron here again under a different name. And trying to do the same thing he did on the "Long Knives are for duffers" thread on the Blade Discussion forum.

Sorry... But what you stated is a total pantload. As I responded to your other almost identical post - I question the mindset of anyone who equates a knife or a gun to a sexual organ. If you do, then man do you have problems.

If you can't see the advantages of having a larger cutting tool at times, you may not be the woodsman that you and your daddy think you are.

I'm raising the "bullsh!t Flag" on this one.

(sigh)

Maybe I ought to try to read posts more thoroughly before jumping in and flaming.

Sorry Larry. My bad. We're on the same page!:D

What are the odds of this happening? For modern combat to end up knife-to-knife, at least two guns would have to fail, right? Yours and your enemy's.

1) sentry removal
2) Your gun falis and he hasn't seen you
3) You're out of ammo and being overrun
4) urban or house to house fighting, you turn a corner and he's 10 feet a way, you are in the process of changing a mag... I can think of lots of scenarios, but it all comes down to one thing... you can't predict what will happen, soldiers have needed knives and tomahawks and bayonets and other cqb weapons alot since the invention of the assualt rifle, and whatever the chances, it's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. I'll take an extra pound or three as many miles as necessary if it means I might survive an "unlikely," mishap. Your point is valid, but mister murphy doesn't care. :)

Very True...there is no greater likelihood that you will engage the enemy with a knife or other "personal" weapon of choice than in MOUT. Further, the Marine Corps has just revamped their CQB program...all in the name of what the modern Marine will likely face. Think about it...when you're clearing rooms (or caves for that matter), at what point are you EVER more than a few feet...maybe 10 feet...from your enemy? I may be a bit biased since I serve as an MP / Criminal investigator and my training reflects a heavy emphasis on this sort of thing... But, recent world events suggest that this is the type of combat we will become increasingly involved in....for some time to come. For me, this means my RMJ Talon and CRK Project II will remain close at hand.

Yo mnblade:

I was actually reelling a story I read OF AN ACTUAL EVENT. Sentry removal happens with knives in ALL WARS. As already stated as well, tomahawks are being used to aid clearing caves. A knife is still tops for taking out sentries. Men can get up after being shot, or cry out. Guns can jam, etc. But, sneak up on a Sentry and push your bowie through his neck and cut out, and all is done nice and quiet like.

Check out Blackhawk Down to see how knives can help in a battle when you need to be quiet.

Anything else?

For up close and personal I would rather use my E-tool than a knife.

Just my opinion,
Allen.

This is going to sound a little dumb, but I think there is a little bit of us that figures if a small knife is 200 bucks with a 4 inch blade and a 7 inch blade by the same maker along the same lines is 300 bucks, that we are getting almost double the knife for only 1/3 more money. Kind of the all you can eat theme in knives. A little is good, more must be better yet. That said I like and use big knives for what they are best at.
